17 Oct. M. Re. Ac. d. Hist. Salazar. A. 21. ff. 229-232.	363. Juan Manuel, Imperial Ambassador in Rome, to the Emperor. Has borrowed, in his own name, 30,000 ducats from the Belzers and Fuggers, and has sent them to the army, that the Swiss may be paid. Begs the money may be sent to him. [On the margin, written by Mercurino de Gattinara :] He has done well. The Cardinal of Sion has not come with the Swiss to Italy. He is so much hated by them that he is afraid they will kill him. It is necessary to name another "governor of his army," and to order the great sums of money to be accounted for which have been sent to those "devils," the Swiss. [Written on the margin in the handwriting of the Chancellor Mercurino de Gattinara :] Captain Brissac Bruner has received the money, and must account for it. The Cardinal intended to remain in Switzerland before he was nominated legate. He has since changed his mind. Only those Swiss who are partisans of France hate him.
	Prospero Colonna has written to him that the French have changed their position. Does not believe they will attack. [Written on the margin by Gattinara :] The Emperor has letters from Prospero of the 15th, and from the Marquis of Mantua of the 19th.
	The Venetians show every day more clearly that they are partisans of the French. Has spoken with the Venetian ambassador. [Written on the margin by Gattinara :] The time will come when the Venetians will be punished, &c.
	A courier has been intercepted. The Count of Mirandola is a good Imperialist, &c. Siena. The King of England has sent a book against Martin Luther to the Pope. It is said that all the learned men of England have taken part in its composition. Hears that it is a good book. The Pope has given to the King of England the title of "Defender of the Christian Faith." This title prejudices no one, as all Christian princes are, or ought to be, defenders of the faith. [Written on the margin by Gattinara :] It is true that all princes ought to be defenders of the Christian faith. As, however, this title has been given to the King of England, it makes it seem as if he deserved it more than others, and as if other princes do not defend the faith so well as he does. Decima.
