William, lord of Hoerne, and the lord of Arkel. Signification that there was between their ancestors and is still feared a most mortal strife, from which fights, homicides, imprisonments, raids, and rapine have taken place, and are still going on; and worse things are looked for. But as they believe these strifes would be caused to cease by a contract to intermarry between the said William, and Matilda daughter of the lord of Arkel, now eleven years old, they being related in the fourth degree of kindred, the pope is petitioned to grant the necessary dispensation.

Signification that of old, by common consent of the bishop dean and chapter, it was ordained that the chancellor of Wells should by himself or a deputy lecture in theology or canon law in the schools within the precincts of the cathedral church of Wells on lecture days, beginning and resuming his lectures each year on the morrow of St. Calixtus [October 15] and going on to the translation of St. Thomas of Canterbury [July 7] any lawful hindrance excepted, and that anyone on being admitted to the dignity of the chancellorship should take oath to fulfil this obligation; which ordinance and statute have been faithfully observed. Now lest they should be called in doubt, the bishop dean and chapter pray the pope to confirm them.

The abbot therefore prays the pope to declare the said altar and the cemetery belonging thereto and the aforesaid chapel of St. Nicholas to be exempt; and also the parish of the said altar and parishioners, of whom the greater part are of the domain of the said monastery and occupied in its service; and also to exempt the chapels of Bruere and Wyrwyn, annexed to the said altar, and the parishioners and ministers who serve the said altar and chapels, from ordinary jurisdiction, and to subject them to that of the abbot and convent and their successors, granting them full ordinary jurisdiction over the said parishes and ministers.

The pope gave him a canonry with expectation of a dignity and prebend of Chichester, after which by collation of Simon, late bishop of Ely, he obtained the archdeaconry of Ely, on condition that no one else claimed a right to it, the pope's right being also preserved; and on its being understood that a reservation of the archdeaconry had been made in favour of cardinal de Mota, he resigned it; and whereas he has obtained the treasurership of Chichester, he fears, since some are looking for it, to lose the former grant by having got the archdeaconry. He therefore prays the pope to dispense him so as to hold the treasurership.
