William Lowndes to Sir Roger Mostyn [Paymaster of Marines]. My Lords are informed by the enclosed letter [missing] from Sir William Gifford that a Detachment of General [Henry] Holt's Regiment of Marines is lately arrived at Deptford. Treasury warrant to the King's Remembrancer to enlarge from prison Edward Gilliat, one of the sureties of William Cawthorpe, deceased, late Receiver General for part of Co. Lincoln, he having been kept close prisoner for 15 months in Lincoln gaol and thence removed to the Fleet, where he has been 12 months, very aged and almost blind, and by his long imprisonment rendered very infirm and incapable of making any satisfaction for Cawthorpe's debt, but formerly a considerable trader and well esteemed in his county.

Same to the Customs Commissioners to permit Thomas Edwin of London, merchant, to compound (for 1,000l.) his surety bond for Thomas Coleman's debt of 3,912l. 10s. 0d. on tobacco bonds.
Prefixing: report by said Commissioners on said Edwin's petition. Some time after Coleman failed his sureties John Cawsey absconded and Thomas Price died insolvent, and Thomas Perrin, tobacco merchant, became a bankrupt. Petitioner being utterly incapable to discharge so great a debt obtained an Act of Parliament to permit him to compound and now prays to compound accordingly. Ibid., pp. 335–8.

Nov. 4. William Lowndes to the Treasurer of the Navy. The Treasury Lords direct you to apply (out of the 100,000l. lately imprested to you at the Exchequer for wages to ships ordered to be laid up) 3,400l. to the Jamaica sloop to 31 Dec. last before she sails from Portsmouth on her voyage to Jamaica. Please certify this order to the Navy Commissioners: “that they may take notice thereof accordingly.” Disposition Book XXIII, p. 22.
Same to the Attorney and Solicitor General. Mr. Charles Mason has represented to my Lords that he is now ready to procure an absolute sale of Mote Park adjoining to Windsor Great Park if his Majesty shall think fit to purchase same, and that out of the same the debt owing from him to the Crown shall be satisfied. Treasury reference to Alexander Pendarves, Surveyor General of Crown Lands, of the petition of the Earls of Mar and Loudoun shewing that when they were Secretaries for Scotland (after the Union) they lived and kept their Offices in a house in the Privy Garden formerly the house and office of the Scotch Secretaries; that they have been at great expense in putting the said house in repair and in adding to it some new buildings for the better accommodation of two families; and having had assurance from her late Majesty that they should have a lease thereof, a petition in order thereto was referred to Surveyor General Manley, who died before any report was made thereon: therefore praying a lease thereof from his present Majesty according to the Civil List Act. Treasury warrant to the Auditor of the Receipt, the Clerk of the Pells et al. to repair forthwith to the Office of Thomas, Lord Mansel, late one of the four Tellers of the Receipt, and to deliver over his cash by its particular denominations and kinds to the three other Tellers or any of them as you shall think most expedient for the public service, taking care that such Teller be duly charged therewith and the said Mansel discharged therefrom by throwing down bills and striking tallies for so much in like manner as the practice hath usually been upon the death or removal of a Teller. Treasury warrant to the Excise Commissioners to pay 20l. to Mary Whiting, widow of William Whiting: out of the Duties on starch: in full satisfaction for his alleged services in relation to the said Duties, she alleging that the Duties on Starch and the schemes for collecting the same were projected by him and that he spent much money and time therein and has left her with seven small children in a deplorable and necessitous condition.

Kyd, the pirate: that a relation in France lately died and left him 500l. which his correspondent sent over in the ship Stephen in coffee, black Flanders wrought silk and wrought linen; but the said goods, except the linen, have been seized and condemned as imported contrary to law, the petitioner's correspondent being ignorant of our laws: therefore praying relief on petitioner's satisfying the officers. Nov. 10. Treasury reference to the Navy Commissioners of the petition of Benj. Edmonds of London, merchant, shewing that in 1707–8 he contracted with the Navy Officers [Office] to supply Commanders of his Majesty's ships in New England and New York with what money they should want and to receive from them [in repayment] bills of exchange drawn on the Navy Board, allowing 45 per cent. for the difference in exchange: that there remains [in his hands] of bills unpaid the amount of 7,186l. on the Navy besides 753l. in bills drawn on the Ordnance: as also 2,000l. in bills drawn by Sir Hovenden Walker: therefore praying payment of same.
