Feb. 6. Same to the Auditors of Imprests enclosing the letter [missing] from Mr. Granville, Secretary at War, concerning the 859l. 12s. 0d. imprested by Mr. Brydges to Major Giles Stevens towards raising recruits for the Regiments in Spain; also an account of his application of the same. The said Major now applies to be discharged thereof. Please report how he may regularly be so discharged. Out Letters (General) XIX, p. 299.
Same to the "Right Honble. Mr. How," [Paymaster General of Guards and Garrisons], enclosing an abstract [missing] of bills drawn on account of pay to the troops late under the command of Col. Nicholson and for extraordinary charges in relation to the Expedition the last year on the continent of America and of other sums due on that account; which abstract is likewise attended with vouchers and orders of the Council of War there relating to the same. Please accept the said bills and lay before my Lords a state thereof and of the other demands in order to their payment: but as to the bills payable to Monsieur Subercase and Monsieur Bonaventure you are desired to acquaint the merchants that they will be accepted and paid as soon as notice arrives that the passes are granted to the three ships that carried the prisoners from Port Royal to Rochelle and also to Mr. Mullins who went along with them according to the agreement made by the said Subercase in that behalf. Feb. 7. Money warrant for 25l. 1s. 10½d. each for 1709 Xmas quarter to the serjeants at arms, viz. Thomas Charnock, Thomas Wyberg, Edmund Williamson, Thomas D'Critty [sic for Critz], John Templer, Daniell Gardner, Mathew Hutton, Thomas Turst, Joseph Lawson. Feb. 7. Same dormant for 200l. per an. to Col. John Pearne, Lieut.-Governor of the Island of Montserrat, as by the privy seal of 1710 Aug. 31: for his support in that employment and as in lieu of all presents from the Assemblies: as from 1710 Aug. 4, the date of his commission: to be payable at the Exchequer out of the Four and a Half per cent. duty.
In the margin: a later confirmation dated 1711 June 14 by Treasurer Oxford hereof. Money Book XXI, p. 10.

William Lowndes to the Duke of Shrewsbury. The [Principal] Officers of the Works have laid before my Lords your warrant to them for fitting up her Majesty's Chapel at Hampton Court with all convenient speed and an estimate of the charge thereof amounting to 2,735l. 9s. 4d. Please lay the said estimate before her Majesty and let my Lords know if it be her Majesty's pleasure the said works be performed notwithstanding the great expense they will amount to. Treasury reference to Mr. Brydges of the petition of Lieut. Edward Dean shewing that he served as Ensign, &c., in Trepaud's [Col. Jean Trapaud] Portuguese Regiment in her Majesty's pay, and her Majesty having directed all Officers in the Portugal service [the British Officers in such Portugal Regiments] to be at their posts by March 1 next, new style, he is incapable of doing same by reason he is a prisoner in the Fleet: therefore praying an advance of four months' subsistence to enable him to obey said direction "being a favour which has been done to Officers in the same service." Reference Book VIII, p. 445.
Treasury warrant to the Excise Commissioners for stay of process against Robert Payne, surety (with Thomas Crabb, senr.), for Thomas Crabb, junr., for the due performance by the said Thomas, junr., of certain articles, dated in Oct. 1706, for his answering and returning to the General Excise Office in London all moneys paid to him by William Crosbie and Richard Lanham, Collectors of Excise.
Prefixing: said Commissioners' report on said Payne's petition. In May 1707 the said Thomas, junr., became a bankrupt, being then indebted to the Queen for 2,799l. 6s. 3d. of such money, whereupon the surety bonds were put in suit and the debt thereby reduced to 1,399l. 6s. 3d. and the said Payne's estate is considered sufficient to satisfy the remainder. In compassion to petitioner and his large family we have forborn to extend his estate on his assurances from time to time that he would raise money to satisfy the debt. But it is now three years old. Feb. 7. Treasury letters patent authorising Col. Francis Nicholson to take up from any Receivers or Collectors of her Majesty's Customs or from any others accountable for her Majesty's revenues in Virginia, Maryland, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts Bay and New Hampshire in New England such sums as he shall find absolutely necessary for defraying the contingent charges of the Forces under his command and [for] other services relating to an Expedition which her Majesty has committed to his care and conduct. Upon the said Receivers' producing the receipts of the said Nicholson to the proper officers before whom they are accountable allowance or discharge will be given them. And the said Nicholson is to give us an account of what moneys he shall so take up and of the particular expenditure and application thereof for her Majesty's service. And in case sufficient money be not found in the hands of the said Receivers or Collectors he the said Nicholson is hereby empowered, for the better carrying on the said Expedition, to draw bills on James Brydges, Paymaster General of the Forces Abroad; and care will be taken that same shall be duly accepted and paid. Feb. 8. William Lowndes to the Customs Commissioners to instruct Benjamin Johnson in the business of the Customs in order to his being employed therein. Out Letters (General) XIX, p. 300.
Treasury reference to same of the petition of John Gammon shewing that having imported some brandy contrary to the statute, according to the information by Joseph Beverton, an officer of the Customs, but the proof thereof being not made out the said officer by licence of the Court compounded with him for 16l., the like sum being payable to the Queen for the said offence: therefore prays that her Majesty's share may be remitted. Secretary at War of the petition of Col. William Kerr for himself and the rest of the Officers of his Regiment of Dragoons praying that same may be augmented from six Troops of 54 men each to 60 men each and for such additional Troops as may be thought fit: the Regiment being ordered for Flanders; on which occasion other Regiments have been augmented. Ibid, p. 445.
Feb. 9. Treasury warrant to the Receipt to distribute and apply the sum of 20,021l. 9s. 4d. to Deficient Funds as follows; the said sum representing the income between Jan. 12 last and Feb. 9 inst. from branches of the revenues as follows, viz. 3,887l. 17s. 4½d. from New Customs; 2,093l. 7s. 1d. from Additional Impositions; 143l. 10s. 7½d. from Vellum [Duties]; 6,002l. 15s. 9½d. from Continued Impositions; 3,902l. 15s. 5½d. from Salt Duties; 3,972l. 5s. 0d. from Windows; 18l. 18s. 0d. from Marriages, this last item being a surplus from the first General Mortgage [or Sinking Fund Scheme]: the said distribution and application to be hereby as follows, viz.

the said 6,862l. 6s. 5d. for Malt tickets (together with 11,624l. 15s. 3d. remaining in the Exchequer unissued to complete the several proportions for the Malt Lottery Tickets out of the General Fund for Deficiencies) will complete the sum of 18,487l. 1s. 8d. certified by the Paymaster and Comptroller of Malt Tickets to be due for the last payment thereupon now in course. Letter of direction for 20,000l. to Harry Mordaunt, Treasurer of the Ordnance: out of loans to be made by himself on credit of Malt anno 1711: half thereof being for land services and half for sea services of the Ordnance. Disposition Book XXI, p. 45.
William Lowndes to the Attorney General enclosing a letter [missing] from the Customs Secretary and one from the officer appointed by the Customs Commissioners to take care of the quarantine in the Medway, acquainting them that no watch is yet appointed for that purpose in the parishes adjoining to the creek. My Lords desire you to consider the matter as to the charge of the said watch, and whether there be any objection to the appointing some of her Majesty's Guards to assist the country in keeping the said watch. Please send your opinion herein by to-morrow morning to my Lords in order to be laid before a Committee of Council which meets then. Out Letters (General) XIX, p. 300.

Treasury warrant to the Queen's Remembrancer for stay of process against John Weston, late Receiver General for Co. Surrey.
Prefixing: said Weston's petition shewing that he has passed fines and sealed conveyances for sale of his estate to Sir Peter King who is obtaining an Act of Parliament to indemnify "him" from the Crown on payment of the purchase money. Warrants not Relating to Money XXI, p. 189.
Feb. 10. Money warrant for 80l. to John Tucker for half a year to 1710 Xmas on his salary as Keeper of her Majesty's Paper Office. Money Book XXI, p. 19. Disposition Book XXI, p. 56.
Treasury confirmation for the execution of a money warrant of 1702 Sept. 22 for 64l. 2s. 1d. to Leonard Thompson, Treasurer's Remembrancer, in the Exchequer Court, ut supra, Calendar of Treasury Books, Vol. XVII, p. 356. Money Book XVI, p. 155.
William Lowndes to the Mayor of Rochester enclosing the Customs Commissioners' report [missing] on the petition presented to the Queen in behalf of your town and the towns of Chatham, Gillingham and Strood, representing the danger that may arise to those places and the kingdom if the quarantine to be performed by ships coming from the Baltic should continue to be performed in the Medway and if the goods out of such ships should be aired at Hoo Fort. You will see by the said report upon what reasons the said places have been appointed for that purpose. But my Lords direct me to acquaint you that if you or the other petitioners can propose any places more proper and not liable to the like objections that you have made, it shall be laid before the Queen for her direction thereupon. Same to Mr. Granville [Secretary at War], enclosing the memorial [missing] of Moses de Medina with an account of the money he demands to be advanced on the contracts signed by him on behalf of Sir Solomon de Medina for furnishing bread and bread waggons for the service of the Forces in the Low Countries in the year 1711; [the said demands] amounting to 41,360l. 7s. 6d.
Please peruse the said account and if it be rightly stated you are to prepare a royal warrant for payment thereof by James Brydges to said Sir Solomon de Medina. Ibid.
Feb. 10. Same to the Excise Commissioners to peruse the enclosed draft [missing] of a clause for laying new Duties on Candles. Return the same with your observations thereon as soon as possible. "I desire the favour of Mr. Riley that I may speak with him this afternoon if it stands with his convenience." Ibid.
Treasury warrant to the King's Remembrancer to deliver up the surety bonds of Francis Robartes as late one of the four Tellers of the Exchequer, he having obtained his quietus est from the Clerk of the Pipe Jan. 24 last, grounded on the certificate of the Auditor of the Receipt.
Prefixing: report by J. Morgan, Deputy Queen's Remembrancer, that said bonds may be delivered up on the quietus as above.
