Treasury warrant to George, Earl of Halifax, Auditor of the Receipt, to reserve and set apart the sum of 53,902l. 1s. 8d. out of the General or Aggregate Fund (established by the Act of 1 Geo. I., St. 2, c. 12, for the Bank and others) as in part of the sum of 90,000l. which became due to his Majesty on the yearly sum of 120,000l. Secretary Townshend directed George Werden, a tidesman in the Inferior List, London port, to attend at the Assizes at Nottingham, Derby and York as a witness for his Majesty in some causes which were to be tried in those places. In his absence Werden was suspended by you from his said employment. My Lords direct you not only to take off his said suspension but that you present him to be preferred to the Superior List of tidesmen, London port. Ibid.
Same to Edward Parsons. “I am commanded to desire you to transmit hither an account of the arrears of the present and late taxes [Land Tax] due from the Lords Commissioners of his Majesty's Treasury for the time being.” Ibid.
Sept. 4. William Lowndes to the Earl of Carnarvon [late Paymaster of the Forces Abroad]. Mr. Jett, Auditor of Crown Land Revenues, has represented that 86l. 5s. 6d. advanced out of the Land Tax moneys anno 1709, 1710 and 1711, for recruits raised for Regiments on the Establishment of Ireland, hath not yet been refunded to the respective Receivers who paid it, and that the same is an impediment in passing their accounts. The late Queen signed a warrant 1712–13 Jan. 5 [this warrant is not entered in the Treasury Books] directing the then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland to give orders to the Paymaster General of the Forces in Ireland to remit the said sum hither to reimburse the said Receivers. Please inform my Lords how far the said warrant has been complied with.
Auditor Godolphin [Auditor of Crown Revenues of Wales] has also represented [to my Lords] that there have not as yet been delivered in his Office any tallies for the moneys paid by Mr. Whittingham, late Receiver General of Kesteven and Holland, Co. Lincoln, for recruits delivered to Officers of Regiments then under your pay. I am to enclose the said representation [missing] and to desire you to inform my Lords how this affair stands. (Same to Sir Roger Mostyn to the like effect as above concerning the tallies for said Whittingham's payments for recruits.) (A like letter dated Sept. 5 from William Lowndes to Mr. Mostyn. As this affair requires as much despatch as possible with regard to the Receivers' accounts which are to be passed before Michaelmas next I enclose you a copy [missing] of the above representation of Auditor Godolphin, so that you, having acted under your brother as his deputy, may give what assistance you are able thereto.) Same to the Earl of Lauderdale. Two persons well skilled in assaying and working of minerals are despatched hence in order to survey the mine with the mountain about it called Sir John Erskine's mine in the parish of Alloa in Scotland five miles north east from Stirling, and to assay the ore, whereby it may appear whether the same be a silver mine and of what value. The names of the two persons are Justus Brandshagen and James Hamilton. They have instructions signed by the Prince of Wales for their guidance in that affair, wherein you are named to be assisting. I am directed to enclose a copy of the said instructions and to desire you to assist and protect them on arrival. (Like letters to Mr. Haldane and Mr. Drummond.)

Money warrant for 30l. to Sir Isaac Newton to reimburse the like sum by him advanced to Thomas Hamilton, who is gone or is going down to Scotland with his brother, James Hamilton (to whom a like sum hath been issued) about the affair of the [abovesaid] silver mine said to be discovered there: and is intended to defray the said Thomas's charges not only in going down [to Scotland], but also during his stay there. William Lowndes to the Earl of Lincoln [Paymaster of the Forces]. The Treasury Lords desire that the sum of 540l. (due upon a bill of exchange drawn from Placentia 31 Aug. 1715 by John Moody on the Commissioners of Victualling here [in London] and payable to Mr. Jonathan Sheppard for value received of Mr. George Fownes, junr., in provisions for his Majesty's Garrison of Placentia under the command of the said Mr. Moody) may be paid out of money reserved in your hands for the pay of the said Garrison and that it be placed to account thereof accordingly. The Treasury Lords are informed that several sums of money, assignments of shares of ships and other securities are deposited in your hands to be applied as the Customs Commissioners shall order. My Lords direct you to place same in the hands of Horatio Walpole, senr., and Francis Hawes, Esqrs., present Cashiers of Customs, in order to their being applied as aforesaid. Same to the Earl of Lincoln. Send my Lords an account of the money you contributed [subscribed] as Paymaster of the Forces for the purchase of 5 per cent. annuities; how much thereof has been transferred by you, and to whom, and from what time the said annuities were to commence and the amount remaining in your name untransferred for the use of the public and the growing annuity thereon. (The like letter respectively to Mr. Aislabie [as Treasurer of the Navy] and Mr. Mordaunt [as Treasurer and Paymaster of the Ordnance]. Ibid.

The Treasury Lords have by letter of this day's date ordered 888l. 11s. 6d. to be paid to Major General Wightman to reimburse sundry extraordinary expenses he was at whilst commanding his Majesty's Forces in North Britain. It appears to my Lords by copies of receipts enclosed [missing] that 700l., part thereof, was advanced to him by Archibald Douglas, Receiver General of Scotland, out of public moneys in said Douglas's hands. Sept. 6. Christopher Tilson (in the absence of the Treasury Secretaries) to Mr. Madocks [Cashier of the Bank of England]. It appears at the Treasury that 21,500l. is wanting at the Exchequer to complete 1,079,000l. which was contributed for the purchase of 5 per cent. annuities payable in the Bank. But as there were certain discounts to be allowed out of the said contributions of which the Exchequer hath no notice my Lords direct you to send them an exact account of the said discounts and of the money that is yet remaining in your hands of the said contributions. “You'll please [take care] that this be sent so as to be laid before their Lordships at their next sitting which will be on Monday next.” Out Letters (General) XXII, p. 110.

Treasury warrant to the Salt Commissioners to stay for six months the prosecution against Sir Thomas Johnson for salt Duties, he having petitioned for relief for salt shipped for export for Ireland but [which] perished in the said voyage, under the provision of the Act of 4 Anne [4–5 Anne, c. 23], which provided for discharge of the Duty on certificate of the loss attested before the Justices of the Peace at the Quarter Sessions for the county or place concerned.
