concerning the claims made by the verderers of Sherwood Forest as to
fee trees and of the prejudice likely to come to the timber if they set
out what trees they please to satisfy their demands. The Lord
Treasurer is not satisfied that they have any right to fee trees. No
such demand has ever been allowed to any verderers south of the
Trent. You are to examine their claim and report thereon. Out

Mill alleging that the master of the Anne took out great quantities

of Civil List moneys : for the service of the Privy Purse, over and
above the 500l. per week for the Privy Purse. Disposition Book

Treasury reference to the Prizes Commissioners of the petition of
Math. Butterwick shewing that he had charge of a prize and her
lading in Barcelona Bay from Mr. Proudfoot, agent for prizes on board
the fleet ; that the cargo was sold for 2200 dollars and 927 doubloons
of which Proudfoot has accounted 900l. short and petitioner is
detained here by the Prizes Commissioners to witness against
Proudfoot, but petitioner has received no consideration for loss of
time nor for saving the Queen's money at the hazard of his life when
the said prize was cast away near Barcelona. In the margin : a
later reference dated 1706-7 Feb. 18 of same to same Commissioners.

Adams, chirurgeon to the Independent Company in Newfoundland,
shewing that her husband was sent in 1702 to the said Independent
Company in St. John's Harbour since which time she has received

for the year 1705 several men were respited and the Paymaster stops
the whole arrears of the Officers to make good the subsistence that
has been issued for the men so wanting : but her husband is no way

Royal warrant dated from Newmarket to Sir Edward Northey,
Attorney General, to acknowledge satisfaction on the record of the
judgment penalty of 500l. in Trinity term 1699 against Charles Mans
for collusively delaying to prosecute a parcel of alamodes and
lustrings which he had seized 12 months before : he having been a
messenger in ordinary upwards of 12 years under Wm. III and unable
to pay the fine being reduced by his confinement to live on charity.
He is first to release to the Crown a debt of 71l. 8s. 2d. due to him

Notwithstanding the many great concerns for which you are accomptable
you have not passed any accompt since your appointment as
Surveyor General of Woods [Trent South]. The Lord Treasurer is
very much displeased. You are to lay before him forthwith a state

Same to the Salt Commissioners. By the act of 8 and 9 Wm. III
c. 20 several Salt Duties are appropriated till 1 Aug. 1706 for repayment
of loans and deficiencies. The Attorney General is of opinion
that by act of 1 Anne c. 7 the overplus, after such appropriations,
arising up to that date is appropriated towards certain other
deficiencies specified in the said act of 1 Anne c. 7. You are therefore
to keep the accounts of the moneys of said Duties before 1 Aug.
last distinct from those after that date and to pay same into the

to pay to Mr. Addison et al., owners of transport ships hired
in Ireland, [their hire money for] 2 months more (over and
above the 2 months' advance allowed by their contract payable

the end of every 4 months whilst such ships are in her Majesty's

would be equitable they should be on the same foot with the ships

Same to Mr. Sweet. The Lord Treasurer has read yours of the
31st ult. and 3rd inst. and is pleased with your care about Lord
Galway's bills and with what you propose as to saving in future the
charge of commission on such bills as the said Lord shall draw from
Spain. You are to accept and pay same accordingly and to save the
public the charge of commission in all cases where you possibly can.
He would also have you acquaint Sir Solomon de Medina, Baron
Suaso and the rest of the merchants that have had any of Lord
Galway's bills drawn on them that the Lord Treasurer takes very
kindly their readiness to accept the same and that they may assure
their correspondents in Spain that if upon any future emergency
Lord Galway draws more bills on them they shall be duly and
punctually paid. I wish I could now give you an account that my
Lord had ordered a warrant for your cravings as in the memorial
which the Duke of Marlborough delivered into the Treasury on your
behalf. I have mentioned it to my Lord Treasurer more than once,

of Windsor Sandys, mercer, concerning a seizure of some remnants
of wrought silks mixed with gold and silver which were shipped in
ignorance by a servant of his amongst a quantity of plain or wrought

of Katherine Forrest widow shewing that her late husband John
Forrest was sent to Jamaica by the Earl of Rochester in September
1701 with an Ensign's commission and was put on the West India
Establishment of half pay and died 1705 May 2 and never received
but 4 months' subsistence for his whole service ; "that she has
applied to the Duke of Ormonde but not being mustered in Jamaica
the said half pay could not be paid without" the Lord Treasurer's
particular direction. Ibid., p. 242.

petition of Sir John Talbot, the sole surviving Trustee for the sale
of Fee Farms, shewing that his person and estate stand obliged to

Treasurer to tell you that the wind which has been contrary for a
considerable time seems now to be coming about and tis hoped that
her Majesty's fleet and the land Forces on board will be able to sail
very speedily. Least they should stand in need of subsistence
beyond what they carry with them, if they should come to the coast
of Spain you are to use your best endeavours to procure credits
for them in such places as Col. Richards shall name, who comes to
you in the first packet boat from hence ; "which money so furnished
is to be paid out to these Forces at the same rates as the payments
are made to her Majesty's Forces on the Portugal Establishment."
I have read to the Lord Treasurer your letters of the 2nd and 7th
inst., new style. As to what relates to Gibraltar I sent you his
directions on the 23rd ult. He would have you signify to the Governor
that there must be a very distinct account made of the whole charge
relating to Gibraltar. As to the warrant concerning the payment
of pieces of Eight the Lord Treasurer agrees with your opinion that
it had been much better to use the word "current" than the word

Treasurer Godolphin to Thomas Handasyde Esq., Governor of
Jamaica, to take care that Leonard Compere, Receiver General of

remainder of 20,000 crowns to the Elector Palatine, as the Queen's
moiety of the charge of a journey made by his Highness to Vienna
in 1703 at the instance of her Majesty and the Allies for the good
of the common cause : the States General having paid the like
sum of 17,000 crowns over and above 3000 crowns formerly paid.

J. Taylour to the Customs Commissioners to report on the enclosed
letter [missing] from Mr. Fowler, Assistant Secretary of the Admiralty,
together with a letter from Mr. Warters, the Lord Admiral's solicitor,
relating to making free 4 prize ships lately taken with provisions on
the coast of Ireland by Capt. Comocke, Commander of her Majesty's
ship Speedwell and sent to the Leeward Islands. Out Letters (General)

Same to the Revenue Commissioners in Ireland. The Lord
Treasurer is informed that Francis Palmer, sheriff of co. Mayo, on
July 15 last shot Major John O'Donnell in the back who died of his
wound soon after and it being found by the Coroner's inquest wilful
murder the said Palmer is fled. The Lord Treasurer is surprised to
have this notice from anybody sooner than yourselves.
You are to certify anything likely to come to the Crown by the

to send an officer to the lodgings of Baron Spanheim, Ambassador
from Prussia, to seal his goods ; he being upon his return. Out

Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Stamps Commissioners
to pay 150l. as reward to John Montagu their solicitor, he having
been very serviceable in discovering many great abuses committed
in the Stamps revenue by attorneys, solicitors and other practicers
in the law ; and further to issue to him their warrant directing him
to continue his solicitation and prosecution of the said abuses.
Prefixing : said Commissioners' report. Many offences committed
by attorneys, solicitors and others belonging to the Courts at Westminster
(whose practices have been to make their clients pay the
Duties though they dont duly enter and file their proceedings charged
therewith) are not within the clause of indemnity in the last Low
Wine Act [4-5 Anne c. 23, cl. 8]. It is now more particularly
necessary to put the laws in a stricter execution against such
after the notice we have given them as well by our inspectors
and distributors as by the Gazette, and we doubt not but
our employing the said inspectors will be a considerable service
to the revenue and in some measure supply the present decay
of [? revenue from] law business from whence this Duty does
chiefly arise. We conceive it convenient to begin with these abuses
and the rather because the prosecution thereof may give less offence
to boroughs and corporations and their members and yet may have
such influence on the officers of inferior courts and corporations as
to deter them from the like offences for the future. But it is
necessary that our Solicitor have particular order to prosecute same
in the Courts of Westminster because of the great discouragements,
oppositions and clamours that any attorney or solicitor may expect
who is employed in prosecuting for this revenue and especially against
those of his own profession and belonging to the Courts wherein he
