Report to Treasurer Godolphin by William Blathwayt as Auditor
of the Plantations on the petition of Anne Bridges, widow of Dr. John
Bridges, late Chief Justice of New York ut supra p. 321.
On the recommendation of the late Earl of Bellomont, Governor
of New England and New York, William Atwood was, by the late
King's signet and sign manual, constituted Chief Justice of New
York with the established salary of 140l. per an. New York money
payable out of the revenue of New York and 300l. per an. sterling
payable in England. By privy seal dated 19 Dec. 1700 375l. was
paid thereon [on the 300l. per an.] for 1¼ years to 1702 Lady day.
On the arrival of Lord Cornbury in New York the said Atwood
being accused of several misdemeanours made his escape from thence
into England : whereupon Dr. Bridges, then in New York, was by
her present Majesty's signet and sign manual constituted Chief
Justice of the said Province loco said Atwood with all the rights and
emoluments as amply as the said Atwood. He received the salary
of 140l. per an. payable in New York and there is nothing due to
him thereupon to the day of his death. I do not understand that
his widow could justly claim any further allowance here in England
as no privy seal passed for the same "and that I had heard your
Lordship upon several occasions declare her Majesty's pleasure that
the said 300l. per an. allowed to the said Atwood should not be
continued to any person succeeding him in that office." His widow
is now at New York and destitute of all help and is become an object

Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to Sir Isaac Newton, Master of
the Mint, to pay into the Exchequer the 3142l. 2s. 2d. balance of
moneys coined out of the gold received by you from on board the
Guernsey man of war brought from New England and landed at
Portsmouth.
Prefixing : said Newton's report dated March 5 inst. on the coining
thereof. The standard weight after melting and toughening was
65 pounds 10 ounces 11 pennyweights 5 grains and being coined it
made 2944 guineas and 22 grains which at 21s. 6d. the guinea and
2d. the grain amounts to 3164l. 19s. 8d. In the invoice the gold is
reckoned at 5l. 5s. per ounce supposing it perfectly fine and reckoning
a Crown piece at 6s. which is the rate in the Plantations and by
this reckoning the gold is valued in the invoice ("envoys") at
4137l. 15s. 9d. By abating 1s. in 6s. and allowing for the waste in
melting and toughening and for the want of perfect fineness the
value comes down to 3164l. 19s. 8d. Money Book XVIII, p. 177.

Royal warrant to Treasurer Godolphin to give his warrant to
Edward Wilcox, Surveyor General of Woods, Trent South, for
felling sufficient non-navy timber in Windsor Forest for building a
bridge over the Thames at Datchet "for the better conveniency
of our passage to and from our Castle at Windsor."
Appending : report to Treasurer Godolphin by the Surveyor
General of Crown Lands as to the computation of said timber. Prime
timber for the purpose may be bought at 50s. a load or something
under : the forest timber may come to 10s. a load carriage or scarce
so much, the distance being only between 3 and 6 miles. The time

Royal warrant to John Howe, Paymaster General of Guards and
Garrisons, for the Auditors of Imprests to allow him in his accounts
for Chelsea Hospital the sum of 1909l. 2s. 0d. paid according to the
Queen's directions for soldiers wounded in Germany in 1704 in the
actions of Schellenburg and Blenheim, being non-commissioned officers
and soldiers of Horse, Dragoons, and Foot : being alive and not
otherwise provided for : and further to continue paying the said
disabled and invalid soldiers in like manner as from Xmas last until
further direction from her Majesty ; and to appoint some person to
take care of the due payment of their quarters with an allowance for
the same not exceeding 2s. a day. The Commissioners for said
Hospital having (pursuant to the directions of the Captain General
of the Forces) examined the qualifications of the said soldiers so
wounded in 1704 and certified to the said Howe the names of such
as were disabled in the said actions in order to their being taken into
the said Hospital or otherwise provided by royal bounty : and Charles
Fox [the Paymaster General of the Forces Abroad] having put
4000l. into the hands of the said Howe for that purpose. [The
details of the said sum of 1909l. 2s. 0d. do not reveal the names of
any soldiers, but only the names of Mr. Garniere, apothecary, and
Mr. Noads, chirurgeon. The account carries the payments for

Royal warrant to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland to direct the
Commissioners for passing the Public Accounts of Ireland to examine
and determine the accounts of Sir William Robinson and
Bartholomew Van Homrigh for the supers set on them in the accounts
of Charles Fox and Thomas Lord Coningsby, to wit 1500l. and 2842l.
2s. 6d. imprested to them for respectively buying provisions at Chester
for the Army in Ireland and for repairs of works and buildings in
Ireland : in regard that their books and vouchers which are very
voluminous are in Ireland and that many clerks were concerned
therein and must of necessity come over here for the examination
