Royal warrant to James Brydges, Paymaster of the Forces acting
with the Allies, to pay to any one thereto authorised as your Deputy
Paymaster by the Earl of Peterborough, the 40,000l. in bills of
exchange drawn by Sir Henry Furnese payable in Lisbon and lately
put into your hands ; whereof 10,000l. are to be paid to Charles III,
King of Spain, for the support of himself and family and the remaining
30,000l. to be applied to the service of the Forces there employed
under the Earl of Peterborough towards reducing the monarchy of

Royal letters patent constituting John Bridger to be Surveyor
General of her Majesty's Woods on the continent of America : the
Act of 3 Anne c. 9 having provided for the encouraging the
importation of Naval stores from the Plantations ; and further
the Commissioners for Trade having reported favourably on the
petition of several merchants and traders to New England (who
prayed the sending thither of some proper person well skilled in the
making of tar, raising and curing of hemp and all other naval stores,
to instruct the inhabitants therein) and have advised that a Surveyor
General should be appointed of all our woods in all our Plantations
on the continent of America (that place being now vacant) with
powers and instructions for preserving the woods from spoil and to
inform and instruct the inhabitants in New England and Colonies
adjacent in the best method of making and improving tar and other
naval stores ; and have thereto recommended the said Bridger at
a salary of 200l. per an. as from Dec. 24 instant. At all convenient
times and seasons of the year he or his deputy is to survey all the
said woods and timber, to mark the trees fit to be taken for the Navy
and to keep a register of the same, transmitting half yearly an
account of his proceedings herein to the Lord High Admiral, the
Lord Treasurer, one of the Principal Secretaries of State and the

Report to Treasurer Godolphin from William Blathwayt as Auditor
General of the Plantations on the accompt transmitted from New
England July 30 last of payments made out of the pirate gold belonging
to Quelch and company ut supra pp. 501-2, being 366l. 12s. 4d.
allowed of by Col. Dudley and other cravings amounting to 515l.
18s. 0d. I think the said account of charges and cravings is very
large in most of the particulars and greater by one third than would
be allowed in England for the like service. But forasmuch as the
prosecution of pirates is carried on with great difficulty in the Plantations
and more especially in the Charter Government in New
England and elsewhere, piracy being too much countenanced or
at least connived at in those parts for the encouragement of the
importation of bullion and other such goods, I think the service could
not have been so well carried on by Col. Dudley without an extraordinary
expense. Besides, New England money is one fourth part
less in value than sterling. As to the balance coming to the Queen
a letter was sent 28 March 1705 to Col. Dudley to send over the
value after deducting the charge of prosecuting, so there is no doubt
of a suitable return from him by the soonest opportunity. Out
