Robert Osbolston grandfather to petitioner at a cost of 700l. and
that on the North Foreland was rebuilt about 1659 by same at a

the Malt Surplus anno 1702 : to be paid over to Walter Whitfeild,
Paymaster of the Marines, for the respit demands of Lord Shannon,
Col. Fox and the late Col. Villiers. (William Lowndes to the Navy
Commissioners to so imprest same to Whitfeild, taking care to set
same in super on him in the Navy Treasurer's account). Disposition
Book XVII, p. 74.
Same for 990l. to John How, Paymaster of the Guards and
Garrisons ; out of loans on the Additional Subsidy of Tonnage and
Poundage [the one third Subsidy 2-3 Anne c. 18] : to be as in
further part of 87,125l. 10s. 0d. for 5000 men for sea service, being
part of 357,000l. for the Guards and Garrisons anno 1704 : and is
to be applied for levy money for two additional Companies of 55 men
each to each of the Regiments in the West Indies commanded by
Col. Handasyde, Col. Livesay and Col. Whetham pursuant to the
royal warrant of April 18. Ibid., p. 77.
William Lowndes to the Stamps Commissioners to report on the
enclosed letter [missing] from Mr. Montagu your Solicitor, relating
to the counterfeiting and uttering of counterfeit stamped paper.
Out Letters (General) XVII, p. 363.
Same to Mr. [Richard] Hill, [Envoy Extraordinary to the Duke
of Savoy]. I have read to my Lord Treasurer yours of the 4th
inst. about the subsidies for the Duke of Savoy. He is satisfied
from your reasoning about the value of the Crown at Turin that
the payments to be made to the Duke [should be] at the rate of
82 Sols for a Crown in Bank [money] there. You are to cause the
account to be made up and stated at that rate "as well for what
remains still to clear the whole payments to the Duke to the 3rd of
August by a two months' advance to end Oct. 3 next." Ibid., p. 364.
Same to the Navy Commissioners to report on the enclosed
memorial [missing] from the Excise Commissioners relating to money
paid by several Excise Collectors for conduct money for seamen and
imprest men. Ibid.
Same to auditor Bridges to state the enclosed account [missing]
of the arrears of prizes from 1699 June 24 to 1702 Michaelmas and
thence continued to 1704 April 19. Ibid.
|
Same to Mr. St. John [Secretary at War] to prepare a royal
warrant to authorise Walter Whitfeild [Paymaster of Marines] to
pay 380l. 4s. 2d. as royal bounty and relief to the Regiments of Lord
Shannon and Col. Fox and five Companies of the late Col. Villiers'
Regiment that were upon the late Expedition to Cadiz, for the respits
on their musters 1702 Oct. 25 to Dec. 24.
Appending : said Whitfeild's report on said respits. Ibid., p. 365.
|
Same to the Duke of Marlborough enclosing (a) and (b) infra. The
moneys stated therein will carry on the pay of the Foreigners and
the subsistence of the English Troops composing the 40,000 men till
the 19th June next and the clearing of those English Troops to the
24th Feb. last : and also the pay of the Foreigners and subsistence
of the English composing the 10,000 Augmentation Troops to the
22nd May next. The said money is all received by Mr. Fox except
part of 53,889l. 11s. 5d. which was to be paid out of loans on the
Malt Duties and which also I believe will be satisfied in a very few
days.
My Lord Treasurer thought (as he justly might) there could be no
good reason to justify any inconveniences which the Army might
suffer for want of money and therefore sent for Mr. Fox and Mr.
Pauncefort and found they had not remitted all the money they
had received but intended to send the bills [of exchange] by this
post and he received from them another account here enclosed
[missing] to rectify Mr. Sweet's account and to show that money has
been remitted to him to the 24th inst. with an overplus. I am very
certain that the first account taken from the books in this [the
Treasury] Office is true and your Grace may please to take notice
that there is in it a sum of 30,000l. which must be placed to account
beyond the 19th of June next. It is a great honor to me that your
Grace will please to command my service. As to the General Officers'
Contingencies and Poundage mentioned in your letter [dated the
Hague, April 29 new style, see Marlborough's Despatches Vol. I,
p. 250] I shall obtain the Lord Treasurer's directions very
speedily.
Appending : (a) account of the payments directed by the Treasury
to the hands of Charles Fox [Paymaster General of the Forces Abroad]
for the service of the 40,000 men anno 1704.
