Dec. 16. Letter of direction for 300,000l. to Charles Fox out of loans to be made by him on credit of the Land Tax anno 1704 next and immediately after 1,250,000l. shall be lent on credit of said tax : to be in part of said Fox's order for 884,072l. 2s. 6d. for 40,000 men anno 1704. The orders for the said loans are by agreement to be drawn without interest. Disposition Book XVII, p. 13.

Same to the [Principal] Officers of the Works to pay 100l. per an. to Robert Beddoe as from 1703 Sept. 29 to defray the charge of cleansing the streets and public paving before the Palace of Whitehall twice in every week and carrying away the soil thereof : all by reason that the Lady Mary Kirke in behalf of herself and Peircy Kirke her son, housekeeper of said Palace, has by her petition represented that pursuant to a late Act of Parliament for paving and cleansing the streets in the cities of London and Westminster (whereby the Housekeeper of the Palace of Whitehall is obliged to have the streets before the same twice in every week swept and cleansed, that is to say from Denham Buildings in Scotland Yard to King Street, Westminster) they did in the time of Wm. III. employ the said Beddoe to perform this service, who was paid 100l. per an. by the Cofferer of Wm. III.'s Household : and that pursuant to the direction of the Lord Treasurer the petitioner [Lady Mary Kirke] has lately performed that service and in doing thereof has employed the said Beddoe : therefore praying that the said allowance may be continued to him. Dec. 20. Royal warrant to the Earl of Ranelagh to pay 734l. 13s. 6d. to Capt. Porter, of the Royal Regiment of Foot of Ireland under Brigadier Frederick Hamilton, the said Captain being commissioned 1701-2, Feb. 17, to raise a Company to be added to said Regiment but by great misfortune 42 thereof were drowned near the Texel in their passage from England and the few men that remained served the campaign with the Regiment and the said Captain has since at his own expense completed the Company again, notwithstanding 4 of his new men going to Holland were taken prisoners into Ostend : by reason of all which difficulties and losses the said Company could not appear complete in Holland until April 25 last and no regular muster could be taken thereof before that date so that the said Captain has received no money for same and could not have raised same again or supported it without the assistance of the Officers of the Regiment who for want of the money they have advanced from time to time are reduced to very great extremities. The said sum represents the pay of 60 men and Officers 1701-2 Nov. 1 to 1702 April 30 ; pay of the Officers from 1702 April 30 to Dec. 24 ; and the pay of 56 men from 1 Sept. to 24 Dec., 1702. Same to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of William Clenland, Commander of the Queen's ship Montague, shewing that having a truss of silk containing about 112 pound weight at 24 ounces to the pound he did on the 13th May 1703 and by Mr. Russell, a merchant at Plymouth, send a sample on shore to the Custom House to know if it might be admitted to entry, which was [done] and the Duty paid thereon, which silk coming to London by the Exeter carrier was seized in the inn and was sold by the officer [after condemnation] : therefore praying a moiety of the sum realised, and for the officer to make restitution. Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Queen's Remembrancer to prepare a commission under the Exchequer seal for setting out the port of Falmouth and the port of Truro and the port of Penryn, and the port of Helford, and to assign such a space of ground near the present Custom House at Gweek to be a lawful quay or wharf for loading and discharging goods, to wit such space as shall be adjudged necessary and proportionable to the trade there "and utterly to debar all other places within the said port of Helford from the right or benefit of a quay or wharf for loading or discharging any goods or merchandizes whatsoever" : no such quay having as yet been set out there for the accommodation of the merchants of Helston, whose ships coming to Helford have for many years made their entries at Gweek, this concession having been granted as a favour since the last port commission for Falmouth.
