Jan. 17. Treasury warrant to the Receiver or Collector or sub-collector of Tenths in the Diocese of York to pay out of the said Tenths 25l. to Thomas Hewitt Esq., Surveyor General of Woods Trent North, for one year to 1697 April 24, to be paid over by him to the verderers and clerk of Sherwood Forest in accordance with the privy seal of 1697 Dec. 30 which granted to the four verderers and the clerk of said forest 5l. per an. each in lieu of a tree claimed by each of them as a fee annually.

Royal warrant to Lord Edward Russell, Treasurer of the Chamber, to pay to Sir Lambert Blackwell, Knight Harbinger, the 300l. lately imprested to said Russell by the Treasury Lords for the reception of the Czar of Muscovy and his Court: the same to be applied to the said service by the said Blackwell. William Lowndes to the Postmasters General to order the Receiver General of the Post Office Revenue to pay into the Exchequer (over and above the 600l. per week appropriated by Act of Parliament) 1500l. by 100l. a week for 15 weeks from this day: to be applied pursuant to the King's special direction towards fitting up the Volary Lodgings at Whitehall for his Majesty's use, and the Cockpit Lodgings for several officers and for making divers repairs there and also for wainscotting a room at Windsor and for repairing and enlarging the Doghouse at New Park [or Richmond Park] and for new building a bridge at Audley End and several other services to be performed by the Works. Jan. 19. Treasury warrant to the Customs Commissioners to revive, and to present a fit person for, the place of riding surveyor on the coast of Norfolk between Yarmouth and Cley at 50l. per an.: which for the saving of charge was sunk during the war; the trade of the kingdom [with France] being again open by reason of the peace and the Duties upon all imported commodities being very great. Jan. 20 Same to the Excise Commissioners to pay George Parry 33l. 5s. 9d. for 81 days 1697 Sept. 29 to Dec. 18 on his salary of 150l. per an. as Solicitor of the Revenue of Excise, his instrument of appointment (dated 1689 May 28) having been revoked by his Majesty 1697 Dec. 18. Treasury reference to the Principal officers of the Mint of the petition of Daniell Brattle shewing that he was Assaymaster of the Mints for over 20 years before his father's death and has had very good advantage [fees] by merchants' foreign and home business [as importers of bullion to the Mint]; that although upon the late extraordinary coinage his salary was doubled yet it fell short of his former advantages; that for the better performance of that [recoinage] affair he took great pains to instruct an assistant before the Treasury Lords allowed [any salary for the establishment of] him; and that his said double salary is now taken off: therefore praying relief. Treasury reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of John Phillips, a wholesale milliner, shewing that he had in his shop a piece of English Alamode unsealed and that same is seized and he is prosecuted for 100l. penalty, but is poor and unable to stand the suit: therefore praying a non pros. as to the King's part of the seizure. Jan. 24. William Lowndes to the Auditor of the Receipt to issue 2000l. to Mr. Fox and Lord Coningsby on the unsatisfied order in their name as Paymasters of the Forces, Ireland out of such loans as shall be made at the Exchequer on credit of the late Vote of the House of Commons, and next after the sum already directed to be issued to the Earl of Ranelagh for the Forces. Treasury reference to Charles Twitty and Peter Hume of the petition of Robert Squibb shewing that during the time Mr. Darby was employed under him several Exchequer Bills amounting to 1600l. were cancelled and though there hath been an examination of Exchequer Bills sunk in that time according to the weekly certificates in "that" Office [which Bills] were bundled up and sealed with "their" seals yet these 1600l. [of] Bills are left out and remaining over and above the number and being put in a box in the said Office and discovered but [only] since Mr. Packer's death who had the key thereof, and that Mr. Darby refuseth to give any account concerning the same: therefore praying my Lords to order a speedy examination into the truth of the said Bills. Same to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Thomas Pitt shewing that he was taken into France when the East India ships were taken and received instructions from the Governor of the East India Company for the purchase of the ships and cargo and, understanding afterwards that the importation of the said cargo was refused here, ordered the same to be disposed of again in France; but the person who was therein employed sent over a parcel of muslins, part of the said goods, and the same was seized on arrival here: therefore praying a noli prosequi and that the goods may be delivered to petitioner on satisfying the officers. Jan. 31. Treasury letters patent appointing Henry Pelham Esq. for life to the office of Clerk of the Pells loco William Wardour deceased, the said office having been granted by Treasurer Lord Buckhurst by grant of 1603 July 26 to Chidiock Wardour and his son Edward Wardour (afterwards Sir Edward Wardour Kt.) or the survivor of them with the fee of 61l. 13s. 4d. and further on surrender confirmed to the said Edward for life by writing under the hand of Robert, Earl of Salisbury dated 1611 Sept. 24 on the death of the said Chidiock, and afterwards on surrender confirmed to the said Edward and his son Edward for the life of the longer liver by William, bishop of London, Lord Treasurer; and afterwards granted to William Wardour another son of the said Sir Edward for life, by patent of Treasurer Cottington dated Oxford 1646 April 17 (on the death of said Edward the son about 1645 July 28 and of Sir Edward the father about 1645–6 March 14).
