as the Treasury Lords shall direct: all by reason that the Act [8–9
Wm. III, c. 8] for encouraging the bringing of plate into the Mint
offered a reward of 6d. per ounce out of funds settled or to be settled
by Parliament for supplying the deficiencies of the clipped moneys;
in pursuance whereof divers quantities of plate and clipped moneys
have been brought into the several Mints, for the greatest part
whereof the proprietors have received the said reward, and
moneys are reserved in the Exchequer for the remainder; and for the
greater ease of the King's subjects who had the said reward of 6d.
per ounce due to them for plate brought into the Mint at Chester
(which were in small parcels and very numerous) the King has
caused the said reward to be paid to them by the officers of the
Mint at Chester "out of our own money not appropriated by Act
of Parliament" which has been accordingly done, as is testified by
the affidavit of Edward Lewis, Clerk in the said Mint, the intention
being "nevertheless to reimburse ourself out of the moneys
appointed by Act of Parliament to satisfy the said reward": the
above sum is therefore hereby appointed to be paid to Hall as above
out of the Duties on Houses in accordance with the terms of the

Prizes Commissioners to Edward Ettrick acting for himself and the
said merchants and were imported to London on the John, Thomas
Moulin master, fairly entered and Duty of 28l. per tun duly paid
but nevertheless seized by John Barton as not lawful to be brought
into this kingdom from Guernsey; which the defendants consider
to be directly contrary to the late Treasury order to the Prizes
Commissioners for making it a part of the condition in their public
sales to oblige the buyers to bring all prize wines from Guernsey &c.
into England in order to the payment of the Duty for the advantage
of the revenue: and the Customs Commissioners in their report
thereon being of opinion that the prosecution is groundless and

Order by the Treasury Lords forbidding officers and clerks of the
Exchequer to intermeddle as brokers, solicitors or agents. It has
been represented to us that divers clerks or others belonging to the
Receipt have frequently heretofore negotiated business as solicitors
at the Receipt for persons who have moneys to receive there for
salaries, pensions, annuities or on other account "and have usually
at the request of the said persons when the money so payable to
them has been actually issued according to the forms of the Exchequer
instead of delivering out the moneys, have given their notes for the
same payable upon demand or otherwise.' Such practices may be
of very ill consequence as well to the persons accepting the said
notes (by the death, failure or removal of the officer) and a great
discredit to the Exchequer if any person should so suffer thereby.
It is hereby strictly ordered that no officer, clerk, substitute or
servant whatsoever belonging to the Receipt do in any wise solicit
or intermeddle as brokers, solicitors or agents in the receiving of
moneys at the Receipt upon any account for any person whomsoever
otherwise than as to the duty of their several employments belongeth;
and that they do not at any time give their notes to any person for
moneys left in their hands by way of deposit. Any offender herein

Treasury warrant to the Excise Commissioners to stop all proceedings against Richard Bugbey of Cliffe Regis Co. Northampton
for 25 quarters of malt by him not entered on May 10 last as in his
possession on 20 April 1697; which he alleges had been made two
years before and sold but not delivered and therefore he thought
same not liable: by which concealment he has forfeited 50l. and the
said 25 quarters and he has been prosecuted for the said 50l. before
the Justices for Northampton but no judgment hath been given.
He is first to pay the Duty of 4s. per quarter and the reasonable
charges of the officer in the prosecution before the justices. Warrants
