Treasury reference to the Excise Commissioners of the petition
of John Weston, Daniell Bamford and Edward Richardson, brewers,
shewing that having business out of town, during which time a
double Duty was demanded for nonpayment of Excise on Tuesday
10th August 1697 "which would reduce each of your petitioner's
Duty to a month's arrear, allowed by the Commissioners of Excise"
and that they severally gave orders to their clerks to make timely
payment but the said clerks neglected to tender it till next morning:

Same to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Philemon
Coddan shewing that being empowered by the King's commission
to seize enemies' goods he repaired to Brest in France and there
seized the ship St. James and by force brought her thence with her
lading and condemned her as prize, upon which the King granted
him the said ship and goods, he paying customs which amount to
700l.: but the Customs Commissioners upon some malicious and
false accusation as if the seizure of the ship was not real have put
a stop to the delivery of the ship and paper and insist on a fine
of 100l. to the King from petitioner on pretence of judgment obtained
against him: therefore praying delivery of the ship and paper and
discharge of the said fine. Ibid. |

Same to same of the petition of Robert Quarry shewing that he
bought 12 casks of sugar in Maryland which were part of the King's
fifths of a prize brought in there and condemned in the High Court
of Admiralty in that Province; that he loaded said sugar in Feb.
1694–5 and consigned it to his correspondent at Bristol; notwithstanding which the Customs officers at Bristol finding some of the
casks to be of foreign make seized "the same" as French sugars
and condemned the same in the Exchequer for want of a claim
occasioned by petitioner's absence: therefore praying satisfaction
for the said 12 casks of sugar which were publicly sold at Bristol
by the candle for above 100l. Ibid., p. 233. |

Same to same of the petition of Henry Smith shewing having 60l.
which he was to dispose of in London be lodged it in the hands of
Alderman Allen of Chester till his return from Ireland, but his
business calling him to Ireland and the ship Rachell being ready to
sail at Holyhead he sent 57l. 16s. 0d. of the said money on board
but afterwards hearing that privateers lay in those coasts he applied
to Capt. James Prescott of Liverpool and agreed with him for a bill
for same payable to petitioner in London and going on board to
bring the money ashore he was followed by the Customs officers in
Liverpool who seized the money: therefore praying to have same

Same to the Excise Commissioners of the petition of Arthur
Shallett shewing that rather than stand trial with the Excise
Commissioners he paid 8,260l. 4s. 1½d. in new money which ought to
have been paid in old money by tale at 5s. 8d. per ounce whereby
he is damnified 728l. 13s. 6d.: therefore praying directions to the
said Commissioners to make same good to him. Ibid., p. 234. |

The Treasury Lords to the Attorney General to use all lawful
means to vacate or quash the inquisitions had under the commission
to John Cheale et al for inquiry into derelict lands in Co. Sussex
under colour whereof divers lands, being the ancient propriety of
several gentlemen and others there, were seized into the King's
hands "which commission, we are well informed, is likely to prove
more of the trouble and vexation to his Majesty's subjects than of

into any of the Mints to be recoined at any time between 1696 Nov.
