The Comptroller of the Mint has received for the King's use a fifth part of the silver which was brought from Jamaica in the Richard and Sarah, Thomas Stubbs master, being part of the silver that was taken up by the Elizabeth at the wreck near Hispaniola. It is the King's pleasure that the arrest be taken off the said ship Richard and Sarah. Ibid.
Same to the Customs Commissioners to report on the enclosed, being the Earl of Derby's letter [missing] of the 8th inst. with a copy [missing] of the Book of Rates in force in the Isle of Man and a letter [missing] from the Governor of said island to said Earl. Ibid, p. 359.
Treasury warrant to the Commissioners of Excise and Hearthmoney to discharge Charles Cole and Matthew Collins, sureties of William Watson, a collector of Hearthmoney, for the half year ended 1685, Lady day, from the 40l. remainder of the 57l. debt owing to the King from said Watson for which he was cast in prison and has been there above two years in great want and extremity: all by reason that said Collins has paid 17l. of the said debt and both said sureties are so poor that they are unable to satisfy the remainder. April 24. Royal warrant to the Clerk of the Signet for a privy seal for payment of Sir Cornwall Bradshaw's fee or salary of 31l. 13s. 4d. per an. from Lady day last as Comptroller of Great and Petty Customs and of the subsidy of wool, hides, pelts, lead and tin and of the 3s. per tun and 12d. per pound in Bristol port (which post was granted him by patent dated 1674–5, Feb. 20); and likewise for payment of 102l. 18s. 4d. to him for 3¼ years thereon from 1684, Christmas: he having by deed dated Mar. 31 last surrendered to the King his said salary and all arrears thereon. (Money warrant dated May 7 hereon for said 102l. 18s. 4d., with dormant clause for said salary in future. This warrant quotes the privy seal as dated April 30.) Privy seal for the payment to "our unkle and cousin, Prince Reginald, Cardinal D'Este, Protector of our affairs in the Court of Rome," of 100l. per week to commence from Dec. 12 last and to be payable quarterly, "advancing every three months' allowance from time to time for and during our pleasure " to be without imprest or account. Same to Mr. Corbyn. I read to the Treasury Lords your letter of the 21st inst. They observe thereby that wood yields but a small price at this time in Sherwood Forest. They therefore respite the felling of any more timber there until you inform them that the time is convenient for the sale of wood in those parts. Out Letters (General) XI, p. 360.
Same to Mr. Griffin [Treasurer of the Chamber]. Robert White has petitioned the King setting forth that in the establishment [of the Chamber] he has an allowance of 10l. per an. for one gamekeeper for the manor of Richmond, but since then [since the making of said establishment] the late Treasurer Rochester ordered him to take another gamekeeper for Ham and Kingston side, which he did and admitted him at Midsummer, 1685; therefore prays the like allowance for him. The King has condescended thereto. You are therefore to prepare a [royal] warrant for same and to place same on the establishment as from 1685, June 24. Ibid.
Same to same to prepare a like warrant for the salary of 20l. per an. from 1687, Lady day, to Francis Eades, who, on his father's surrender, was admitted in April last to the office of gamekeeper in ordinary about Hampton Court to the King, his said father's salary having been 18l. 2s. 6d. per an. and a livery coat, but the King having signified his pleasure to Mr. Chiffinch that said Francis Eades should have 20l. per an. Treasury reference to William Hewer of the petition of James Gorman; petitioner shewing that he was collector of the King's rents in Tangier; that upon his accounts of receipts and payments in that service there are 878 pieces of eight due to him, as wrongly charged, and 44 pieces of eight as surplusage; that for want of the original account Mr. Hewer formerly could not certify as to said sums, but said original account is now in petitioner's custody: therefore prays an examination thereof. April 26. Report to the Treasury Lords by William Blathwaite on Col. Edward Powell's petition for a grant of the impost on wine in Antigua, ut supra, p. 1867. On the 10th Sept., 1668, during the government of William, Lord Willoughby, an Act of Assembly was passed in Antigua for several uses as therein, and for defraying other public contingent charges of the government. The said Act is yet in force; and the impost is yearly raised and applied towards the maintenance of the government by order of the Governor with the advice and consent of the Council and one of the Assembly. It amounts, usually to 200l. per an. As it is appropriated by the Act to the support of the government the King may direct to what particular uses it may be applied pursuant to said Act. Whether such disposition [to petitioner] would be so pursuant or not is submitted: or alternatively the direction may be left to the Chief Governor [of the Leeward Islands] now upon the place; and some other suitable reward be appointed to petitioner. April 27. Treasury reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Gideon Vincent et al. shewing that on a former petition for restoration of their goods same were ordered to be appraised at low rates, but the seizers have neglected to do same; therefore pray that their goods may be forthwith appraised. Same to the Hearthmoney Commissioners of the petition of Jo[h]n Gatacre for an auditor's place in the Hearthmoney void by the death of Mr. Pecham. Ibid.
Same to the Attorney General of the petition of Sir Benj. Tichborn, shewing that he petitioned for satisfaction for certain lands now laid into Windsor Forest, but in report thereon the [Deputy] Surveyor General raises conjectures as to petitioner's title: therefore prays that if there remain any doubt as to his title the said Deputy Surveyor General may report from what proofs on record be raises his conjectures. Same to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Geo. Alford, mariner, of Lyme Regis, petitioner shewing that he was the last man that opposed Monmouth at his landing and for his zeal to the Crown lost his employment; that on his petition for a place he was made a tidesman in Bristol port, which is but 20l. per an. and 60 miles from his habitation: therefore prays some other place sufficient to maintain him and his family, he being acquainted with all the ports and creeks in the West. The Treasury Lords to the Rt. Hon. the Marquess D'Albyville, Envoy Extraordinary at the Hague. We have received yours of the 24th inst., in which you intimate that within these [last] two months it was impossible for you to keep within the boundaries set by the King's regulation for ambassadors' extraordinaries, without prejudice to the service; and that you have been forced to use some of that money [which was] sent for the transportation of the officers and soldiers that were called for home by the King. Before we represent this to the King in order to an augmentation of your allowance we must have an account from you of the 3,000l. sent hence for the said transportation. In that account you are to show how much has been employed to the said purpose and how much to uses of your own in that station; and you are to particularly set forth those uses.
