Miscellaneous, 1687

[? 1687.] Unfinished entry of a reference of a petition relating to a discovery of irregularities in the accounts of Sir Henry Crook, formerly Clerk of the Pipe. In the first six years of Charles I's reign the several sheriffs as in the schedule annexed [missing] made their accounts in the Exchequer. The said Crook was by gifts or other indirect means prevailed upon to keep said accounts from being enrolled on the Great Roll or Pipe and by that means no writs could be issued upon the said accounts. This misdeed lay undiscovered till 14 Car. II and being then discovered by William Poe was prosecuted in the name of Sir John Banks, then Attorney General. Reference Book V, p. 49.
