Sir Stephen fox to be Commissioners for the office
of Treasurer of the Exchequer; with full power
"immediately from henceforth from time to time
during the vacancy of the said office or place of
Treasurer of our Exchequer to confirm and approve
of all those orders and warrants which have been
already signed by our late Treasurer [Rochester]
and are remaining unexecuted and which unto
you shall seem reasonable and for our service and
to cause the same to be duly executed":
and also to perform and execute all other acts and
things pertaining to said office and which may or
ought to be performed by the Treasurer of our

to be issued to the Navy Treasurer and 5,000l. to be
advanced to him, making 19,000l. besides the
7,000l. on the paper of weekly disposition [of the
present week, supra p. 1144]. The said 14,000l.
is to be on account of the abovesaid 400,000l. and
the 5,000l. is for stores. |

Appending: (a) a paper of proposals by Robert Brent,
Essex Strode, John Cressett, Robert Nott and
Tho. Herbert; shewing that they have long designed
the bringing in a revenue unto his Majesty by
licensing the Hackney coachmen and in order to
it have procured the Grand Jury of Middlesex to
present all supernumerary Hackney coachmen,
above the number of 400, to be nuisances; whereby
it is in his Majesty's power to suppress them. The
proposers have also by their industry prevailed
with the 400 Hackney coachmen formerly licensed
by Act of Parliament to subscribe an instrument
whereby they voluntarily oblige themselves to
pay yearly 5l. to the King for his licence as formerly
and to be under such regulations as shall be thought
fit. The proposers therefore pray to be entrusted
with the management of this affair under direction
of the Treasury Lords; and that the King would
by proclamation or otherwise suppress all supernumerary Hackney coachmen in or about the cities
of London and Westminster and the suburbs thereof
above the said 400 so to be licensed as above. |
