An order set down at Isleworth the last [day] of September, 1617: Forasmuch as Richard Goringe, late of Egham in the county, of Surrey, is the reputed father of a base child born of the body of Ellinor Hedges, she being delivered the 21st of August last at Stanwell in the county of Middlesex; We, the next Justices [Sir Gideon Awnsham and Edward Barnes, esquire], do order and appoint that the said Richard Goringe shall pay weekly towards the bringing up of the said base child 18d, and she the said Ellinor Hedges (if she keep it not herself) shall pay—d. weekly.
The said Richard ordered to perform the order above-written, and to have twelve lashes at the House of Correction, and to be kept at hard labour until he find sufficient sureties for performance of the order.

Whereas it was openly declared in Court at this Sessions that divers great disorders and misdemeanours have been committed in divers parishes of this county "by mainteyning of Whitsonales and other unlawful games upon pretence that the same is for the repaire of Churches within those parishes where such unlawfull games are used", and also that "divers women assembling themselves in the streets and highwaies in great companies do beg money of all passengers that travell up and downe those wayes", and for both this they allege ancient custom and long continuance: For reformation whereof, complaint being made unto divers of the Justices by divers parents of their children and sundry masters of their servants, how they did usually purloin and embezzle divers of their goods and implements to maintain the said unlawful games used in the time of the said Whitsun Ales, divers of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace at their assemblies heretofore sent out warrants to certain constables and Churchwardens for restraint of the said disorders and abuses, which were not restrained according as they commanded, and did therefore bind over divers persons to appear before them at this Sessions for the maintenance of the said unlawful games, and they not suppressing the said disorderly begging, yet they were pleased to discharge the said parties upon hope of their more careful prevention of the like abuses in time to come; For the better prevention whereof it is now ordered in open Court that the several Churchwardens and constables of the several parishes and precincts within this county where such unlawful games and begging shall happen to be used, shall upon notice of this order from time to time suppress all such unlawfu gaming and begging as aforesaid, and if any person shall wilfully resist their authority herein that then by virtue hereof they be brought before some of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace to find sureties for their personal appearance at the next Sessions of the peace, then and there to be proceeded against according to the Statutes in such cases provided; And for such monies as were this last Whitsuntide collected in any of the said parishes by reason of the said unlawful games used in the said time of the said Whitsun Ales, it is ordered by the Court that it shall be given and disposed of by the Churchwardens of the several parishes to the poor of the parish where any such Whitsun Ales were, and not to be employed for the repair of their churches; And the Churchwardens of all such parishes and places are to attend two of the next Justices of every such parish, that the money so collected may be disposed of to the poor as aforesaid with their privity and direction and not otherwise.

It was ordered at this Sessions of Gaol Delivery that these persons whose names are underwritten, being very dangerous people, should be sent to the House of Correction of this county by warrant from this Court; and that the Governor of the House of Correction do employ them in labour and give them correction and not deliver them out before the next Sessions of Gaol Delivery, nor without warrant of the said Court of Gaol Delivery, but that he attend at the next Sessions of Gaol Delivery to be holden for this county to give account of the said prisoners, and that every Quarter Sessions hereafter he attend the Court of Gaol Delivery with a Calendar of such prisoners as he has received or passed away and how he has ordered and disposed of them from one Sessions to another, upon pain of £100.

Forasmuch as Elizabeth Hill was brought into this Sessions by warrant for leaving a young child carelessly at the door of a house in the parish of St. Alban's, Wood Street, which (as she allegeth) was a bastard born of her body within the hamlet of Mile End in the parish of Stepney, where the same ought to be provided for, if it shall appear to be so upon the examination of two Justices; It is therefore ordered that two of the said Justices next inhabiting to the said hamlet shall take examination of the said cause, and shall take order for the settling and providing for of the said bastard child according to the Statute in such case provided; and it is further ordered that the said Elizabeth shall be had to the House of Correction there to be employed and kept at hard labour until the next Sessions of Gaol Delivery to be held for this county.
