Inquisition, taken at St. Giles'-without-Cripplegate, before Henry Harriott, gentleman, coroner, on view of the body of Christiana Willson, widow, lying dead and slain, by the oaths of Thomas —, — Freeman, William Maydewell, William Machyn, Andrew Bedwell, William Scudamore, William Dyer, John Mosse, William C—, Henry Sybottom, Henry Piggott, Thomas Whelpeley, and Thomas Typpinge, who say on their oaths that whereas John Arter [Arthure] of London, yeoman, with cunning and malicious intention lured and incited the said Christiana to go and walk in the fields at the parish of St. Giles' aforesaid, so it happened that the said John and Christiana being at the place aforesaid between the hours of eleven and tewlve p.m., the said John with malice aforethought assaulted the said Christiana and threw her to the ground and did keep her down, fastening a leather girdle with a buckle round her neck, and did strangle her with the leather girdle so that she died; and that the said John killed and murdered the said Christiana feloniously and of malice aforethought, as aforesaid; and that the said John after the said murder fled from the said place and withdrew himself to a place unknown to the jurors, who do not know what lands or goods and chattels the said John possessed at the time of the said murder. In witness whereof etc.

Complaint being made unto the Court that Joan Winchester, a distressed old blind woman, having heretofore inhabited in three several parishes within the county, viz., Isleworth, Hillingdon and Ruislip, and none of the said parishes will relieve her according to law, it is therefore ordered that Sir William Bowyer, Knight, and other Justices shall examine the cause, that the poor woman may be provided according to the law.

John Burges appeared on information given against him by Roger Risbye for engrossing victuals, and pleaded not guilty.

Simon Greene appeared on information given against him by John Broughton for uttering beer above the rate, and pleaded not guilty.

p. 89. Mr. Warren and Mr. Yorke, the brewers of St. John Street, promised in Court to take away the annoyance with their brewhouses within a month, so far as it shall not annoy the Sessions house at Hicks Hall any more.

Discharged afterwards:—

Richard Parrett of Hampstead, yeoman, brought in by warrant for abusing Sir William Waad and other Justices, to be discharged if two men of Hampstead come not in against him this afternoon.

Thomas Britten of Hampstead, yeoman, swore in court that the said Parratt did say that Sir William Waad and the whole Court did not do him justice and therefore he would complain to the King's Majesty, and the said Parratt confesses he spake those words, but for that it is known to Sir William Waad that he is often troubled in mind with mad fits, therefore he is discharged.

Order for the inhabitants of Finchley to pay yearly to Robert Miller and Agnes his wife 30s., in respect that they are to be kept in Mr. Kampe's almshouses at Friern [Barnet]. It was referred by order from the Lord Chief Justice of England to Sir William Waad and Mr. Wielde, who have thought fit to allow that yearly sum, and it is now confirmed in Court.

Order for Henry Lee of Hammersmith, alehouse-keeper, to be from henceforth dismissed from victualling, for keeping great disorders in his house.
