Warrant from Treasurer Danby to Charles Bertie
and the rest of the Commissioners appointed to
examine the affairs of the Mint. By an order
in Council of June 12 last the King has directed
me to give order for the uttering and vending such
farthings and half-pence of copper as are [in the
Mint ready] coined amounting to 7,281l. 8s. 8¾d.
Thereupon by a warrant of June 17 last [p. 1027 supra]
I directed the Comptroller and other officers of the
Mint to deliver same to you, to be so vended and
sold. In your report of the 5th instant you advise
me that it would be most to his Majesty's service
to receive proposals from such as would advance
money to the King for the said farthings and halfpence,
and as would take the disposal thereof upon
themselves, and that Thomas Doyly has proposed
most beneficially in that behalf, offering within
five days after you shall have received the said
farthings and half-pence into your possession
(whether it be in or out of the Tower) to advance
and pay 7,000l. for the same, that he will take them
by weight and tale, and if upon the tale (which
is to be made before a person appointed by you)
they appear to amount to above 7,281l. 8s. 8¾d.
he will accompt for the same [excess quantity] :
that for [his service in] the advance of the money
and the distributing the said coins he desires a month's
rebate [discount] for the said 7,000l., which amounts
to 35l., and the overplus of the said coins being
281l. 8s. 8¾d. : that he will vend the same in
three months' time, the King's weights, scales
and other utensils being delivered to him by inventory
to be used in weighing and vending same, and to
be returned in three months' time. Of this
proposal I very well approve, and hereby authorise
you to demand said coins from the Comptroller,
etc., and to deliver them to said Doyley, on
terms as above.
