whereas the Collector received a penny per skin :
the Customs Commissioners having on the petition of
said Gruchy, et al, reported that "the duty of
calve skins in the haire had been received at a penny
per skin, according to the printed Book of Rates
formerly extant, but that upon your examination of
the original record, you, finding the same rated
but at 10d., and so to pay but a half penny you

Report to the King from Treasurer Danby on the
petition of John Wheldon relating to the office
of Comptroller of Newcastle port lately fallen void
by the death of Capt. Foster. Application for the
reversion of said office was formerly made as well
by him [Foster] as by said Wheldon, and I reported
hereon to your Majesty 1673-4, Feb. 20, that
said place was absolutely in your Majesty's disposal,
and by a sign manual you have directed
a grant thereof to Robt. Yard for life, which grant
is proceeding, but he is obstructed by the same
pretence of the said Wheldon.

Treasurer Danby to Sir Job Charlton. I have been
informed by the Farmers of the Law duty that the
said duties have amounted to very little in the courts
and offices of the Marches and Great Sessions of
Wales [as against the estimate] of what ought to
be expected from the multiplicity of proceedings
in those court and offices. [This is] occasioned (as
I am informed) by the scruples which have been
raised by some of the officers against paying for
several processes there which [without opposition
men] pay in England. You can best judge both of
the extent of the duty upon the respective proceedings
in the said several courts and offices and the
most effectual means to obtain and recover it.
I recommend it to your care, not doubting but that
all disputes relating to the said duty will find
the most favourable construction for the King
that the words and intention of the Act will reasonably
bear ; and that the collection thereof will
find all due and legal encouragement from you
and from all other judges and officers relating to
those courts ; to whom I desire you to communicate
this letter.

Warrant from same to Francis Dickins, Woodward
of New Forest, Southampton. There is a great
quantity of browsewood and moares or roots of
trees formerly cut down in said forest which may
be sold for payment of the keepers' wages, according
to the direction of the privy seal in that behalf.
You are hereby to sell such to the amount of
300l., and to distribute same among the keepers
towards their wages in such proportions and
according to such directions as you shall receive from
the Lord Warden of said forest. The Deputy Surveyor
of Woods Trent South is to be present thereat.

Constitution and appointment by Treasurer Danby
of Nicholas Bayly, Walter Gold, Edwd. Corker,
Edward Doughty jointly and severally to prosecute
for violations of the Navigation laws of 12 Car. II.,
22 and 23 Car. II., "which said laws I am informed
have not been duly observed, for that great
quantities of the said commodities are commonly
carried directly from the said Plantations to Ireland,
whereby his Majesty is not only defrauded of the
duty upon such commodities payable in England,
but the other public ends of the said Act are in a great
measure frustrated." For prevention hereof
the abovesaid persons are to inspect and intermeddle
(so far as they lawfully may), in all seizures,
prosecutions, appraisements and other proceedings
relating thereto, to prevent combinations and other
abuses and frauds which may be practised therein,
and to view and peruse, and if necessary, take copies
of the bonds and lists of ships which are to be
taken and returned by the said Acts, for the better
discovering of transgressors. For their pains
and charges herein they are to depend on his
Majesty's bounty to be rewarded out of his Majesty's
moiety of forfeitures.

Danby for a money warrant for 5,000l. to William
Roberts, Receiver of the Honor and Castle of
Windsor : to be for the building, rebuilding and
repairing any of the King's houses and buildings
in said Castle : as by the privy seal of 1676, June 14 :
to be paid out of any money in the Exchequer.

Royal warrant to the Attorney or Solicitor General
for a great seal for a grant and demise to Charles
Osborne and John Knight, Esqrs., of all the manors,
lordships, liberties, prepositorys, reeveships, lands,
tithes, tenements, rents and hereditaments in the
annexed schedule ; and of all courts, profits and
perquisites of courts, fines, heriots, liberties,
privileges and appurtenances to the said
manors, etc., appertaining, and of the reversions
and remainders, rents and services of the premises :
to hold from Lady day last for 99 years if the Queen
Consort shall live so long : at the yearly rent of
3l. 18s. 4¼d., payable half yearly. A clause to be
inserted that if hereafter it shall appear that any
of the premises are vested in the Trustees for sale
of Fee Farms, the said Trustees shall permit said
Osborne and Knight, their executors, etc., to hold
and enjoy the same during the estate hereby granted
and shall make and execute such grants thereof
for such estate as is hereby intended. (For docquet

fortifications] at Plymouth, and valued at 448l.,
till he, Sir Edward, have notice at Hungerford
House in the Strand [so] that he may put in his
claim, [he] having a right to about half the money,
the inheritance of the land being in Sir Edward and
Deptford [being] but his tenant for years. This
