Patience, of London, with her lading of wines from
France as petitioned for by Sir Patience Ward,
said ship having returned to London from Rochelle
with wines and navigated by the master and five
English, two Scots and one Greek : it appearing
that by reason of the sickness of one of the men
whom the master sent home, he was necessitated
to employ two Scots, yet so that he paid them no
wages but brought them out of charity, though
thereby he served his own occasions of bringing
home his ship.

Royal warrant for a privy seal as follows. Upon
surrender of Visct. Hawley we conferred upon
Sir John Berry, Kt., the command of Deal Castle,
commanding him to pay said Visct. Hawley
800 guinea pieces of gold, upon our royal word
[promise] to repay it to him [Berry]. Said Berry
has besought us to repay same and in order thereto
has proposed to prosecute Nicholas Girlington,
of Lancaster, late Receiver of Hearthmoney for
said county for the moneys due from him to the
King and thereout to receive said 800 guineas
if Girlington's debt will amount to so much. Said
Berry is hereby to be empowered to sue for and
prosecute said debt due from Girlington and to
compound for same with said Girlington and to
receive thereout such sums as the Lord Treasurer
shall think fit and direct in satisfaction of said
800 guineas, the interest thereof and the charges of

hearing the officers of the Works for Windsor Castle
who claim 250l. 7s. 6d. part of the Greenwax money
grown due (and in Sir Thomas Fanshawe's hands for
the King) before the [date of the] privy seal which
directed the payment of the moiety of the Greenwax
money towards the rebuilding of St. Paul's Church,
and upon hearing the Bishop of London and others
in favour of the grant to the said church, it appeared
to me that the said 250l. 7s. 6d. grew due in the
time that the King had appointed that [Greenwax]
money for the repairs of Windsor Castle, and that
the later direction did not in any sort contradict
the same otherwise than by appointing the moiety
of what should thereafter accrue to be for rebuilding
the said church. I therefore thought it just that said
sum should be paid to the Receiver for the Works at
Windsor, but inasmuch as the same cannot be
done upon the later privy seal without your concurrence
herein, I desire you to give directions to
your Treasurer to pay 125l. 3s. 9d. (out of the order
now drawn for your moiety of the Greenwax) to
William Roberts, the Receiver for the Honor
and Castle of Windsor. This is the moiety of the
order now drawn for your share of the said Greenwax
money and with what is contained in the order
for the Windsor share will be entirely satisfy the
said sum of 250l. 7s. 6d. and will prevent all further
charge and trouble of making any alterations in
the present privy seal or accompts of that [Greenwax]
revenue.

Privy seal for 500l. to Lemuis (Lemuel) Kingdon
as imprest to be by him paid over to Col. William
Stapleton, Governor of the Leeward Islands, to be
by him employed and expended in building and
furnishing a fort at the place called Cleverly Point
for the defence of the island of St. Christopher ;
it having been thought necessary for the strengthening
of said Colony to raise some considerable
fort, and said Cleverly (Cliverly) point
being thought most convenient for the safety
and protection of shipping ; the King being informed
"that the islanders will willingly contribute
their labour and endeavours threeunto, so that
if we furnish 500l. towards the building thereof
they will supply the rest." (Royal warrant dated

Royal warrant to the Clerk of the Signet for a privy
seal for a grant to William Killigrew, his administrators
and assigns, of the personal estate of William
Toms, late of Tewkesbury, co. Gloucester, who
was at the assizes lately held at Gloucester, convicted
of high treason for coining and afterwards executed
whereby his personal estate became forfeit to the
King : with full power to said Killigrew to prosecute
for and recover said estate. (Treasurer

Royal sign manual to Treasurer Danby to pay (out
of the 10,000l. dormant privy seal) 140l. to
Latitia Biggs and Grace Peirson or their assigns
for their interest in a certain field and garden situate
near our royal citadel at Plymouth and containing
by estimation 4 acres 3 rods 17 perches, bounded
with the lands now or late of John Rashleigh, Esq.,
on the west, the ground called the Beacon Haw on the
south, the lands now or late of John Davis on the east,
and the lane leading to the old mills on the north,
part whereof is in lease to said Biggs, relict of
Abraham Biggs, and said Peirson, his daughter,
for the life of George Bagg, Esq., aged about
50 years, under the rent of 1l. 6s. 8d. per an. payable
to the mayor and commonalty of Plymouth to
whom the inheritance thereof belongs : which
said premises with the house thereon having been
valued at 20l. per an., the Surveyor General has
rated the interest of said Biggs and Peirson at
140l., which sum the King has agreed to pay to
them for such interest and for the damage they
have sustained by demolishing the premises or
making use of the same for the benefit of the citadel
at any time before date hereof. Before any payment
be made hereon they are to assign their
interest by conveyance to be approved by the

of London, merchant, so many of the
malefactors within mentioned [schedule thereof
missing] as are at present in your custody
without requiring any fees of him for the same,
he giving bond for conveying them to Saint
Christopher : and that from time to time hereafter
you deliver such transportable malefactors as you
shall have in your custody to complete the number
[of 300 as below] to such merchants or planters
as I shall give you notice of, viz., without fees
and upon such bond [as above]. For satisfaction
of the prison fees due for the said malefactors
the Clerk of the Pipe is hereby to allow on your
accounts 1l. 11s. 0d. per head for the malefactors
you shall so deliver. And whereas it is likely that
you will be in surplusage upon your accounts
hereafter, I intend for the future to issue my
warrants for charging the same by record of surplusage
on the sheriffs of any other counties who
shall be indebted on their accounts.
Prefixing : Order of the King in Council dated
Whitehall 1677, June 1. The Lords Committees
for Trade and Plantation this day reported to the
board that in order to a further supply of
inhabitants of the colony of St. Christopher they
had discoursed with some merchants touching the
transportation thither of such malefactors as by
law might be transported, and said merchants
declared that they would willingly take off and
transport considerable numbers provided they
might not be obliged to pay for them at the gaols
in regard of the great fees demanded by the
keepers : and that thereupon the said Lords
considering the advantage which might accrue
to the King by having the said island supplied
as aforesaid, did advise with Sir John Shorter, Kt.,
then one of the sheriffs of London, to know how
far the charges of the gaol relating to each malefactor
might be reduced, whereby they found that the
said charge might be brought to 1l. 11s. 0d. per
head, which for 300 malefactors (which is the
number the merchants were willing to take
and thought requisite) amounts to 465l. Said
Lords further proposed that said 1l. 11s. 0d. be
allowed to the sheriffs in their accounts as above ;
and further that the merchants or planters who
received the said malefactors free from the gaol
might enter into bond before the Recorder of
London for their safe conveyance to St. Christopher.
All which the King hereby approved and ordered
the Lord Treasurer to direct the performance thereof.

of Crown Lands to give order to the steward of the
manor of Ryme to pass to Henry Kymer an estate [of
a copyhold in said manor] by copy of Court roll
according to the Custom of said manor for three
lives to be nominated by said Kymer : without
fine and under the ancient rent and services.
Prefixing : note of said Kymer's petition as referred
to said Surveyor General, July 10 last ; and of
said Surveyor General's report dated July 13 thereon,
proposing a grant in reversion for three lives at
a fine of 30l. "for that the widow has not repaired
the premises as she ought to have done."

Gurle as gardener and keeper of the royal garden
in St. James's Park between St. James's Park
House and the Spring Garden wall, said Gurle
being thereto appointed for life, loco John Rose
deceased, commencing the first payment from
Sept. 29 last : same to be for said Gurle's wages
for keeping said garden : and further to pay him
320l. a year as by his agreement for maintaining
the charge of keeping said garden as was formerly
paid to the late John Rose on the like agreement,
as by the privy seal of 1676, Aug. 31 : same to be for
paying all workmen, labourers and weeders, for
procuring and paying for all dung, for raising of
melons, making hotbeds for sollading, melon glasses,
waterpots, wherebarrows, waterbarrows, watertubs,
spades, rakes, houghs, dung forks, lines, reels,
shears, nails, leathers, scythes, rubbing stones,
hedging irons, pruning hooks, pruning knives, poles
for hedges, seeds for pannels, shells for the walks,
stone and wooden rolls, fruit baskets for our table's
service, silk and paper to tie the fruit down, seeds
for sallets and other herbs for our kitchen and for
paying all other charges relating to the keeping of
the said garden in as fair and ample manner as same
has been ever kept excepting the wages of said
Gurle and [excepting also] all alterations, new
erections or other additions which we may command
to be made in said garden. The said agreement
and the said 320l. per an. to be during pleasure.
Further as said John Rose and his administratrix
have been at the charge of maintaining said garden
till Sept. 29 last the said 320l. per an. is hereby
to be paid to his said administratrix up to Sept. 29
