Warrant from Treasurer Danby to William Prettyman, Remembrancer of Fruits and Tenths, to supersede process [for First Fruits] against Edward Manwaring, clerk, who was instituted into the rectory of Aldford, co. Chester, by a bad title, to which William Shippon, clerk, was presented by Charles, Lord Gerard of Brandon, by an undoubted good title, and has paid or secured to the King the First Fruits for the said rectory : all in view of said Manwaring's services and poverty, and his having received no profits of said rectory. Royal warrant to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a great seal for re-assuming to the Crown and for granting to Edward Noel, warden of New Forest, the scite or capital messuage of the manor of Lindhurst called the Manor House or Court House and the houses, barns, stables, edifices, gardens and yards and other things which were granted amongst other things to Charles, Lord St. John of Basing (now marquess of Winchester) by letters patent dated 1670, Sept. 7, which patent contained a clause for such re-assumption of the said premises without any diminution or deduction of the covenanted rent : the King having already by privy seal of 1671, June 23, annulled the clause of the said patent of 1670, Sept. 7, which authorised the Receiver of co. Southampton to pay 30l. per an. for the repair of said capital messuage so long as said Lord St. John should have the same ; in lieu whereof said privy seal ordered a payment of 30l. per an. out of offal or dotard timber for such repair and 40l. per an. for repair of the Stables there. The present grant to Noel is to be under the rent of 1s. per an., and the aforesaid yearly sums of 30l. and 40l. are hereby to be paid to said Noel as imprest for the services aforesaid and are to cease to be paid to said Marquess of Winchester. April 3. Charles Bertie to the Farmers of the Law duty to advance 1,000l. to the Treasurer of the Chamber upon tallies which he will deliver to you. He has a great necessity for this sum to supply his office, and it shall be made good to you again (with interest) out of the 5,000l. which you are to advance upon passing your lease. Ibid, p. 63.

Warrant dormant from Treasurer Danby to the Receipt for tallies of pro to be levied in behalf of Lawrence Hyde for the rent of 500l. grown due at Lady day last and so from time to time as the same shall grow due in future from John Pincombe, gent., for the farm of the customs, subsidies and duties on logwood or blockwood, as granted to said Pincombe by the great seal of 1662, Sept. 23, for 21 years at 500l. per an. rent, which rent the King by a great seal of Dec. 1 last granted to said Hyde from Michaelmas last for the residue of said term. [?] Reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of George Pley, junr., praying to be restored [as collector of Lyme port], having been suspended for being 300l. indebted to the King, and surcharged with 600l. by error, and having since paid in said 300l. and deposited a bond due from Bullen Reymes to make good the error. Form of a letter from Treasurer Danby to the Justices of Gloucester. Notwithstanding all former means used to prevent or suppress the planting of tobacco in England, the laws are still violated by planting it in divers parts of your county. I think it necessary to remind you of the said laws and particularly that of 22 and 23 Car. II., desiring you to take care to issue your warrants to the respective high Constables, petty Constables and Tything men and to pursue the trusts and powers committed to you herein ; "wherein not doubting but you will use your utmost endeavours as in a matter of so great importance not only to his Majesty's Customs, but to the trade and navigation of this kingdom." Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Attorney General to enter a noli prosequi to the information against a small packet of 80 oz. of silver and gold thread, 20 bobbins, 6 doz. gloves and a doz. of pewter dishes belonging to Eustace Syer, a servant of Don Bernardo de Salinas, the Spanish Envoy, which goods were lately seized at Gravesend upon their export. Same from same to the Customs Commissioners to permit the shipment to Antwerp or any other port of Flanders without opening or any duty inwards or outwards, of a case brought from the Straits in the ship Olave Branch, Richard Lewis master, directed to Gomes Rodrigues, and belonging to the Countess of Penalva, for whom same is to be sent into Flanders. Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners to deliver, customs free, some gloves, soap, essences, orange flower water, Jessamy oil and three pictures and some paper prints and cuts of the antiquities of Rome, arrived in the ship New Valentine, Roger Williams commander, from Leghorn, being for the account of Sir Robert Jenkinson. Warrant from Treasurer Danby to Richard Bodycourt, Constable of Richmond, in Surrey, to pay to Thomas Mosman, one of the keepers of New Park, near Richmond, the King's moiety of the fine of 20l. inflicted on Jacob Bridgewater for killing a deer in said park, as by the statute of 13 Car. II. against such killing : same to be as royal bounty, the other moiety therefore being due to said Mosman for apprehending and prosecuting said Bridgewater. Money Book (General) p. 52.
Money warrant for 223l. 11s. 3d. to Humphrey Weld, Governor of Portland Castle, for 1 years on the allowance of 149l. 0s. 10d. per an. for the pay of himself and the gunners and soldiers belonging to the said Castle. April 5. Cave that no new [King's] letter pass for a Commission to levy the arrears due to the old Farmers [of the revenue] of Ireland till some person be heard on behalf of William Muschamp, Esq., one of the said Farmers, and notice be given for that purpose to Col. Edward Mansell at the Fountain Tavern, Charing Cross, who will direct [the said notice] to his [Muschamp's] lodgings. Caveat Book, p. 25.
Warrant under the royal sign manual to Lord Vaughan [Governor of Jamaica]. The King's hired ship Thomas and Francis, commanded by Capt. George Gallop, in consortship with a privateer commanded by Capt. Edw. Otway, took the Dame Susan of Amsterdam, aboard of which were 544 negroes, which [prize] being brought to Jamaica was there by the Admiralty condemned to the Crown, the Lord High Admiral and the privateer's fees and charges. Accordingly 300 of said negroes were disposed of and 244 left to the King. On their return to England said Capt. Geo. Gallop and his seamen petitioned for their right in the said prize according to the act of 13 Car. II., which gives them all the merchandise on the gun deck of any prize. Said petition was referred to the Judge Admiral [Advocate] here and afterwards to the Commissioners of Prizes, who after many hearings and full debates, have sentenced and adjudged the said 244 negroes to said Capt., officers and seamen, and have likewise determined what the proportion and shares of the said officers and seamen ought to be. We understand that Sir Thomas Lynch, former Governor of Jamaica, left in your [Lord Vaughan's] hands in money and debts standing out 4,801l. as the produce of the said 244 negroes. In accordance with the order of the Commissioners of Prizes you are to immediately remit to England the full proceeds of the said 244 negroes to Thomas Yates of Grays Inn as agent, trustee or assignee of the said Capt. Geo. Gallop, officers and seamen. Further, the King hereby renounces and releases all right whatever to the said prize of 544 negroes, and hereby invests said Yates therewith in right of said Captain and seamen. April 6. Charles Bertie [to the Auditor of the Receipt] to pay 51l. 11s. 0d. to Col. Buller for last Lady day quarter's interest : which sum the Customs Cashier will bring in to the Exchequer. Out Letters (General) p. 65.
The like for 36l. 10s. 0d. to Andrew Lawrence for one year on his fee of 2s. a day. Ibid, p. 66.
Royal warrant for a privy seal for 500l. to Gratian de Perenant [as royal bounty : to be payable] out of the first moneys recovered upon the debt of 923l. 13s. 0d. long since due to the King from Thomas Thory, deceased, late Collector of Boston : all in consideration of the sufferings of said Perenant in the late times of rebellion and of his good behaviour in discovering a considerable sum of the Coinage duty collected in the port of Boston which was detained [from the Crown] and is now ready to be paid into the Exchequer, and also of his offer to prosecute for the said arrear due from said Thory. Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners to permit three bales of books to be exported back to Malaga, it appearing from the petition of James Jay, of London, merchant, that they were to be carried to Malaga from Marseilles in the ship Constant among a parcel of goods consigned to Carlos Vivis, but were not delivered at Malaga with said goods, but "brought from thence in the said ship which was obliged to come away by reason of foul weather in the coming up of the levants," said Vivis having thereupon desired same to be sent back to Malaga, Cadiz or Tangier. Same from same to same to employ Samuel Dale as a landwaiter extraordinary, London port, to have all the fees and profits of a landwaiter except the established allowance of salary from the King : and on the first vacancy to appoint him one of the deputy landwaiters there. Ibid, p. 279.

Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners to discharge a seizure of several commodities of the manufacture of France seized by Mr. Tomlyns, which (as appears from the petition of Arendt Meyer, a native of Denmark) were shipped to England from France in an English ship to be carried from hence in a free ship to Bergen, in Norway, by reason of the present war between France and Denmark : it further appearing from the Customs Commissioners' report of March 29 last on said petition that part of said goods, viz., the laces, fringes and embroideries are prohibited goods and a fan which is not to be otherwise prohibited than as painted ware or tawed leather ; petitioner being unable to export said prohibited goods direct from France to Bergen by reason of the war, and was therefore enforced to embark himself and goods for London with intention to take the first free English ship thence to Bergen, of which he had beforehand advised Peter Spleidt, of London, merchant, requesting him to provide such passage. Same for 43,115l. 2s. 7d. to Sir Robert Vyner due to him for interest and several rewards as follows, viz. : for 6 per cent. interest and 4 per rent. reward (as by an account thereof) on 20,216l. 10s. 0d. advanced by him for the Privy Purse ; on 3,300l. agreed to be paid and allowed him for the interest, advance and risque of 30,000l. by him paid into the Treasury in Ireland ; on 8,804l. 1s. 0d. and 14,221l. 4s. 0d. which he advanced and lent on several assignments drawn by John Fenn, agent to Sir George Carteret, late Treasurer of the Navy, on Sir Thomas Player, deceased, late Chamberlain of London ; and on 460l. which he paid to William Gomelden for a diamond ring sold to the King ; and for 6 per cent. interest (as by an account thereof) on 93,793l. 9s. 2d. for plate by him delivered into the Jewel House ; and for 2 per cent. reward (as by an account thereof) allowed him for the procurement of 250,000l. on the security of the Hearthmoney farm in 1665, and on 507,541l. 6s. 11d. which he advanced to Sir George Carteret during the times of the plague and the [first] Dutch war : all which said accounts are stated by Auditor Aldworth and were allowed by Treasurer Danby the 2nd inst. : the sum total of the principal money therein for which interest and reward is craved being 898,336l. 11s. 1d., whereof there remained unpaid and due to the accomptant at the 31 Dec., 1671 (being the day to which the accounts are made up), the sum of 27,842l. 12s. 8d. From the said accompts it appears that the interest and several [or distinct, i.e. 4 per cent. and 2 per cent.] rewards of the said 898,336l. 11s. 1d. cast up to the respective days of repayment of such part thereof as was repaid at or before 1671, Dec. 31, and of the said 27,842l. 12s. 8d. (being the residue at that date unpaid) amounts to said 43,115l. 2s. 7d. Further for the said 3,300l. allowed as above for the risk of returning money into Ireland and for the 460l. paid as above to Gomelden, the said Vyner has no security assigned him. The said two sums are hereby to be paid to said Vyner as well as said interest of 43,115l. 2s. 7d. Same from same to the King's Remembrancer to take care that no process be issued against William Tredue and John Hooper on their bond dated 1671, Sept. 29, as sureties for Peter Docton, late Collector of Appledore port, who died suddenly March 1, 1674-5, and is since found indebted to the King 473l. on his receipt of customs for said port, said Docton's estate of 60l. per an. having been long before settled on his wife in jointure, who by virtue thereof is entered and now seised for life, and so pleads the dower in bar to the Exchequer process ; the condition of said Tredue and Hooper being very mean, and they having offered 200l. in settlement (whereof 100l. is an arrear of salary due to John Morrice as Customer of Barnstaple, who offers to release the same) which offer being laid before the King by Treasurer Danby he was pleased to accept : the Customs Commissioners having reported Jan. 22 last that their low condition is affirmed by testimony of Charles Osborne, one of the General Surveyors of the Customs and by certificate of the mayor and inhabitants of Barnstaple.
