Instructions from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners
in reply to their representation of the 6th inst. You
are to order your solicitor to defend, at the King's charges,
the constable of Yarmouth in those actions which have been
brought against him for the seizure of Capt. Huntington's
goods. You may change the stations of the two smacks at
Gravesend and Queenborough, appointing the smack under
Henry Nash to be at Gravesend with 220l. per an. and the
smack under Richard Solomon to be at Queenborough with a
reduced allowance of 216l. per an. ; as you think this is for
His Majesty's service. You are to order 20l. as incidents for
repairing the King's quay at Boston, being the sum rated by
the Commissioners of Sewers for the repair of said quay. On
any Customs officers entering into new and better securities
you are to deliver up their old bonds. You may pay what
reward you think fit (not exceeding 20l. to any one) to some
of the tidesmen lately dismissed who were useful in the
discovery of the abuses practised by the rest. Consider of a way
how to regulate the abuses on the borders of England and
advise with Counsel whether by law a middle place between
Carlisle and Berwick may not be appointed for the receiving
of Custom inwards and outwards, and if so what place is
fittest.

Royal warrant to the Attorney General for a great seal for a
grant to John Ashburnham and his heirs for ever of the reversion
of the three parks late parcel of the Honor of Ampthill
and called the Great Park, Brogborough Park and Beckerings
Park, co. Beds, together with the several yearly rents reserved
upon the several grants thereof as below ; same having been
granted 13 April, 22 Car. I., to Lettice. Viscountess Falkland
(to whom Charles I. was indebted 2,000l.), Sir Edward
Nicholas, kt. (to whom he was similarly indebted 2,000l.) and
John Ashburnham, late one of the Grooms of the Bedchamber
to Charles II. (to whom Charles I. was indebted 8,912l. 2s. 9d.)
to be as security to them for said debts, but with a proviso for
same to be void on payment of said sums on the 10th of April,
1648. By a sign manual of 1646, April 14, Charles I.
declared that although said debt of 8,912l. 2s. 9d. was expressed
to be part of the consideration of said grant yet the
said parks should go wholly and absolutely to said Ashburnham
(charged only with the said sums to said Lady Falkland
and Sir Ed. Nicholas) as a reward of his services done and not
in satisfaction of said debt and that he would convey same to
said Ashburnham, or, if prevented therein, by the said writing
he gave it in charge to the present King to make such absolute
grant. Said Ashburnham afterwards paid to said Lady
Falkland and Sir Ed. Nicholas their said debts and they
thereupon conveyed their interest in said parks to him. By
a great seal of 1661. July 15, said parks were granted to
Ashburnham for 40 years at the yearly rents of 40l., 40l. and
20l. respectively, and by the patent of 1666. July 21, a further
grant of 40 years herein was made to him. At the request of
John Ashburnham, grandson and heir of said John Ashburnham,
his interest herein is hereby made absolute as above.

Belasyse, late Governor of Tangier, passed his accounts thereof
for 1664-5. Feb. 4, to 1667. April 2. His charge amounted to
55,395l. 16s. 3d. and his disbursements to 51,627l. 2s. 11d.
and remains 3,768l. 13s. 4d., towards which 1,571l. 17s. 3d. is
due to him for interest, and 1,098l. 13s. 0d. has been paid by
him, thus leaving 1,098l. 13s. 0d. You are to prepare a great
seal declaring the King's approbation of the items of allowance.

Report to the King on the petition of Lawrence Hyde, as by the
order of reference of the 3rd inst. By patent under the great
seal of Ireland your Majesty granted to Edward, Earl of
Clarendon the half year's rent of the Adventurers and soldiers
payable out of the four counties of East Meath, West Meath.
Kilkenny and Wexford. By a certificate of the Earl of
Anglesey, then Vice-Treasurer of Ireland, dated 1669, Aug. 5,
it appears that 15,080l. 19s. 7d. has been paid into the
Exchequer of Ireland out of said counties, and of this sum the
Earl of Clarendon received only 6,192l. The balance was first
employed towards the payment of the army in Ireland, and
being once repaid was afterwards employed to supply the
necessity of several suffering persons unto whom your Majesty
had granted warrants for various sums upon the half year's
rent in general throughout that kingdom. Said balance was
therefore never paid to said Earl. Petitioner has a just
claim to it.

who (together with one Lewis, the master of Williams's ship,
and others unknown) on May 28 last violently beat and

on him in said Williams's house and afterwards pursued him
into the street and knocked him down several times, threatening
to kill him, using him so barbarously that he was left as dead
and continued for some time senseless without life to be
perceived in him by those that carried him off from the place,

for present supply. The Hearthmoney Farmers will pay in
that sum on their half year's rent due the 9th inst. As this
sum is under your charge you are to issue same to said Pepys,
taking said tallies to that value as deposit "until you shall
have a regular discharge for the said sum, which I shall take
care of."
