Sept. 8 Instructions from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners in reply to their representation of the 6th inst. You are to order your solicitor to defend, at the King's charges, the constable of Yarmouth in those actions which have been brought against him for the seizure of Capt. Huntington's goods. You may change the stations of the two smacks at Gravesend and Queenborough, appointing the smack under Henry Nash to be at Gravesend with 220l. per an. and the smack under Richard Solomon to be at Queenborough with a reduced allowance of 216l. per an. ; as you think this is for His Majesty's service. You are to order 20l. as incidents for repairing the King's quay at Boston, being the sum rated by the Commissioners of Sewers for the repair of said quay. On any Customs officers entering into new and better securities you are to deliver up their old bonds. You may pay what reward you think fit (not exceeding 20l. to any one) to some of the tidesmen lately dismissed who were useful in the discovery of the abuses practised by the rest. Consider of a way how to regulate the abuses on the borders of England and advise with Counsel whether by law a middle place between Carlisle and Berwick may not be appointed for the receiving of Custom inwards and outwards, and if so what place is fittest. Royal warrant to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a great seal for a grant to Thomas, Lord Windsor of the house, messuage or tenement, with the appurtenances now lately erected, with all the rooms now there in his possession, situate in St. James's Park, abutting on the garden belonging to the lodgings in the possession of Christian Harrell, apothecary, on the East, on a grove of trees in the said park on the West, on the lodgings in the possession of Lord Duras on the North and on the lodgings in the occupation of said Harrell on the South, being 52 feet in depth North to South ; to hold for the lives of said Lord Windsor and his two sons, Otho Windsor and Thomas Windsor. Sept. 9 Warrant from Treasurer Danby to [Edmond] Long, Esq., head searcher of Customs, London port, to deliver a seizure of 26 doz. of skins to Peter Barr and Arnold Sartillon, merchants, they being such parts of an export shipment of 250 doz. of calf skins as happened (contrary to law) to weigh more than 4lbs. per skin : the said skins in the whole one with another not exceeding 36lbs. per dozen skins as limited by the statute. Same from same to same. You are empowered by patent to compound seizures not exceeding 40s. in value. Several small sums have been received and from time to time may be received in the outports by way of such composition. The respective Collectors of the outports are to receive such moneys and pay them to the Receiver General and Cashier of the Customs in London, keeping a distinct account thereof : and transmitting duplicates thereof to the Comptroller General of Customs. Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners to deliver to Lord Gerard and his mother and Mr. Digby certain goods now in London port lately imported from France in the "Anne" yacht. Out Letters (Customs) III. p. 26.
Caveat that no grant or release pass of the debt due to the King from Mr. Polstead, late Collector of Lynn, or that of Scrase, his secretary, till notice be given to Mr. Barnard. Caveat Book, p. 15.
Dr. Troutbeck desires that no grant may pass to Sir Robert Thomas of the debt from Robert Mellish or the late Bishop of Lincoln upon the Tenths of the clergy till satisfaction be given said Troutbeck or he be heard therein. Ibid.
The Earl Marshal of England desires to have notice if any application be made for renewing the grant of the Princess Meads in Lambeth or for the purchasing of the present rent thereupon reserved to the Crown. Ibid.

Sept. 13 Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners to deliver at her lodgings at Lincoln's Inn Fields the several belongings of Lady Lockhart, relict of Sir William Lockhart, as in a schedule [wanting], lately brought from France on the hoy "Elizabeth," of London, John Hacker master, and on the King's yacht "Marlin," Jacob Baker commander. Royal sign manual to Sir Phillip Lloyd, Receiver of the rents late in jointure to the late Queen Mother, to pay 100l. to Elizabeth Marbury as royal bounty in consideration of faithful services by her performed to the said late Queen. King's Warrant Book IV. p. 438.

Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customer, Collector and Comptroller of London port to swear John Evance into the office of an undersearcher London port, loco John Seymour, surrendered. Out Letters (Customs) III. p. 26.
Sept. 15 Royal warrant to the Attorney General for a great seal for a grant to John Ashburnham and his heirs for ever of the reversion of the three parks late parcel of the Honor of Ampthill and called the Great Park, Brogborough Park and Beckerings Park, co. Beds, together with the several yearly rents reserved upon the several grants thereof as below ; same having been granted 13 April, 22 Car. I., to Lettice. Viscountess Falkland (to whom Charles I. was indebted 2,000l.), Sir Edward Nicholas, kt. (to whom he was similarly indebted 2,000l.) and John Ashburnham, late one of the Grooms of the Bedchamber to Charles II. (to whom Charles I. was indebted 8,912l. 2s. 9d.) to be as security to them for said debts, but with a proviso for same to be void on payment of said sums on the 10th of April, 1648. By a sign manual of 1646, April 14, Charles I. declared that although said debt of 8,912l. 2s. 9d. was expressed to be part of the consideration of said grant yet the said parks should go wholly and absolutely to said Ashburnham (charged only with the said sums to said Lady Falkland and Sir Ed. Nicholas) as a reward of his services done and not in satisfaction of said debt and that he would convey same to said Ashburnham, or, if prevented therein, by the said writing he gave it in charge to the present King to make such absolute grant. Said Ashburnham afterwards paid to said Lady Falkland and Sir Ed. Nicholas their said debts and they thereupon conveyed their interest in said parks to him. By a great seal of 1661. July 15, said parks were granted to Ashburnham for 40 years at the yearly rents of 40l., 40l. and 20l. respectively, and by the patent of 1666. July 21, a further grant of 40 years herein was made to him. At the request of John Ashburnham, grandson and heir of said John Ashburnham, his interest herein is hereby made absolute as above. Royal warrant to the Attorney or Solicitor General. By order of the Commissioners for the affairs of Tangier John, Lord Belasyse, late Governor of Tangier, passed his accounts thereof for 1664-5. Feb. 4, to 1667. April 2. His charge amounted to 55,395l. 16s. 3d. and his disbursements to 51,627l. 2s. 11d. and remains 3,768l. 13s. 4d., towards which 1,571l. 17s. 3d. is due to him for interest, and 1,098l. 13s. 0d. has been paid by him, thus leaving 1,098l. 13s. 0d. You are to prepare a great seal declaring the King's approbation of the items of allowance. &c., as in said account as above and a full pardon and releaseof and for all the said charge amounting to 54,297l. 3s. 3d., and of all liability for said remain of 1,098l. 13s. 0d. Report to the King on the petition of Lawrence Hyde, as by the order of reference of the 3rd inst. By patent under the great seal of Ireland your Majesty granted to Edward, Earl of Clarendon the half year's rent of the Adventurers and soldiers payable out of the four counties of East Meath, West Meath. Kilkenny and Wexford. By a certificate of the Earl of Anglesey, then Vice-Treasurer of Ireland, dated 1669, Aug. 5, it appears that 15,080l. 19s. 7d. has been paid into the Exchequer of Ireland out of said counties, and of this sum the Earl of Clarendon received only 6,192l. The balance was first employed towards the payment of the army in Ireland, and being once repaid was afterwards employed to supply the necessity of several suffering persons unto whom your Majesty had granted warrants for various sums upon the half year's rent in general throughout that kingdom. Said balance was therefore never paid to said Earl. Petitioner has a just claim to it. Warrants Not Relating to Money VI. p. 172.
Warrant from Treasurer Danby to John Ramsey, serjeant at arms, to arrest William Williams, merchant in Bodinnock, who (together with one Lewis, the master of Williams's ship, and others unknown) on May 28 last violently beat and assaulted John Holmes, an officer of the Excise there, falling on him in said Williams's house and afterwards pursued him into the street and knocked him down several times, threatening to kill him, using him so barbarously that he was left as dead and continued for some time senseless without life to be perceived in him by those that carried him off from the place, all this while detaining the constable in the said house to prevent him from keeping the peace. Entry of docquet of a demise to Arthur Spry for 99 years determinable on the lives of George Spry, Arthur Spry, junr., and William Spry, sons of said Arthur Spry, of all toll tin growing due within the manors of Helston in Kerrier, Tewington, Carnedon Prior, Treverbyn Courtney, Stoke, Calstock, Rillaton, Liskeard, and half the manor of Tywarnhaile, parcel of the Duchy of Cornwall, and of all tin found or to be found within the several lands of the said respective manors, with full power to search for and work the same according to the custom of the Stannaries : to be in consideration of a fine of 133l. 6s. 8d. and of the surrender of a lease of 4 Aug., 23 Car. Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners to employ Daniell Rhodes as Collector of Boston port, loco John Butler. Out Letters (Customs) III. p. 25.
Same from same to the Customs Cashier. The sum of 37,100l. is to be paid to the East India Company out of the Customs of East India goods imported by them after March 16 last as by the privy seal of July 27 last [supra p. 798]. You are hereby to allow them a discount of six and six months' interest hereon according to their charter. Ibid.

Sept. 21 Richard Hughs, being entitled by patent of 7 Dec., 24 Car. II., to the first vacancy of a King's waiter's place London port, desires (if any application be made by Mr. Feild or any other) that no posterior grant prejudicial to him may pass and that notice may be given to Mr. Jones, an attorney in Lion's Inn. Sept. 22 Royal warrant to the Attorney General for a great seal for the grant of 400l. per an. to William Bridgman for seven years from Michaelmas next for his attendance under the Principal Secretaries of State. Sept. 22 Entry of the reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of John Brewer, master of the "Charles," of London, belonging to Thomas Kirby, shewing that said ship being laden with deals, brimstone, and salt beef to go to Nantes in France with orders to touch at England for a sea brief was seized by the searchers at Gravesend. Oxford, containing a dwelling house with a backside and garden thereto heretofore called Hamonds House, being in the High St. or Parkegate St., the forepart theref being Southward upon the High Street or Parkegate Street, late in the tenure of Margery Jenkins alias Morgan, with all houses, buildings, barns, &c., &c., thereto belonging, all which escheated to the King as parcel of his manor of Woodstock by the death about March, 1672, without heirs, of Mary late wife of Edward Belson, of Hampton Gay, gent., deceased, by whom said premises were purchased for 60l. from one Edmund Hiorne of said borough, gent. : and also to grant him all arrears of rent thereof from the death of Mary Belson : to hold for 99 years at the rent of 3s. per an. : to be in consideration of said Lowe's services to the late King at Oxford without any salary and for his charges in prosecuting the King's title to the premises ; said Lowe having also married a former daughter of said Edward Belson.

Treasurer Danby to the Navy Commissioners. I have considered your letter of Aug. 5 last and have acquainted the Admiralty Lords with the proposal about altering your lists of payments in course. You will receive orders from them about it. I have directed payment of the 100,000l. to the Treasurer of the Navy as I designed by 5,000l. a fortnight out of the Customs over and above the 2,000l. a week and am content that, according to your desire, you assign the first 10,000l. thereof for imprests and reserve 5,000l. for payment of Sir Thomas Clutterbuck before Xmas next according to the terms of his contract and assign the remainder of the complete payment of your second list of bills to midsummer last and no further and for stores only since that time which are and shall be bought and served into the King's stores. Treasurer Danby to Sir George Downing, one of the Tellers of the Exchequer. I have lately ordered tallies for 14,300l. to be struck on the Hearthmoney farm rent due in March next in favour of Samuel Pepys, for Tangier, for the quarter ended June 30 last. Mr. Pepys desires an advance of 5,400l. thereon for present supply. The Hearthmoney Farmers will pay in that sum on their half year's rent due the 9th inst. As this sum is under your charge you are to issue same to said Pepys, taking said tallies to that value as deposit "until you shall have a regular discharge for the said sum, which I shall take care of." Anthony Gilby of the island or parcel of sandy ground called the (Great Sand or Sink or) Sunk, in the Humber, consisting of about 3,500 acres of drowned land, with all wastes, trees, mines, &c., there, and all royalties, franchises, fishings, fowlings, &c., whatsoever, at the rent of 5l. per an. ; his former lease thereof granting him same at same rent commencable from the first embankment of 100 acres thereof, which, in the opinion of the Surveyor General of Crown Lands, will be very difficult and of great charge to embank and improve. Sept. 30 Report to the King from Treasurer Danby, on the petition of Capt. George Purdon (as by the order of reference of July 22 last), concerning his lands in Munster. Said lands were never seized or sequestered, but still continued in his possession as Protestant proprietor, but in the late usurper's time he was necessitated to draw out a decree of the said lands and now desires to surrender them and obtain a patent thereof. You are to draft a proclamation and letters necessary to be sent to the Governors of the Plantations to prevent the importation of European commodities into any of the said Plantations from any other place but England.
