May 4 Warrant from same to the Customs officers to observe a royal warrant of the 1st inst. to permit certain goods (100 tons of lead, some horses and wine) to be embarked in the Swedish man of war now riding in the Thames, Captain Clark, commander. Ibid.
May 10 Treasurer Southampton to the Customs Farmers to find some tidewaiter's place for Mr. Manwareing "recommended to me by my Lady Duchess of Somerset." Ibid, p. 332.
Warrant from same to same to pay Viscount Fanshaw, the King's Remembrancer, 45l. 12s. 0d. for fees due to himself and clerks for passing the accounts of the Customers of the outports; and 21l. 12s. 8d. and 233l. 0s. 2d. for parchment books, &e., detailed, for London port and the outports respectively. May 19 Order by Treasurer Southampton and Lord Ashley for Mathew Tredwell and Jane Cave, widow, of Oxford city, brewers (against whom proceedings were had for improper entries) to pay to Sir Thomas Peniston. Farmer of Excise for co. Oxford, the moneys due from them for Excise from Sept. 29 last to March 7 last, they producing their books to shew their brewings and submitting therein to the arbitration of Serjeant Holloway, "and for that it is found that the mingling of beere or ale after it is wrought with worts, which as is alledged hath beene heretofore the usage, doth not only give great opportunity of defrauding His Majesty of the duty but alsoe produces drinke not kindly wrought which will neither keepe nor is wholesome and therefore unlawfull, it is therefore further ordered that from henceforth they forbeare the usage of mingling strong beer or ale after it is wrought with small worts; but that they work them up in several and distinct guiles according to the respective qualities," and further to pay said Penniston 40l. for his expenses in attending this arbitration before the Lord Treasurer when the matters complained of ought to have been heard and determined by the Justices of the Peace.
