Royal sign manual for payment of the old arrears of the
Customs. By a sign manual of Oct. 31 last, the interest of
Sir John Shaw et al. in the customs farm ended Sept. 29 last,
and Sir Nicholas Crispe's interest in the farm of Spice were
sequestered. Pursuant hereto the Treasury warrant of Nov. 3
last was issued. But we have since accepted from said Shaw
et al. 30,000l. in settlement of our claim on said farm [sic for
claim for arrear of rent due on the farm of the Customs
ended 1667, Sept. 29]. Therefore the abovesaid seizure,
sequestration and stop is hereby discharged. Further there is
charged in the Receipt several warrants and orders amounting
to 42,732l. 13s. 6d. payable out of the arrears due from said
Sir John Shaw et al. Of this sum the various warrants and
orders amounting in all to 30,000l.ut supra p. 1,179 are to be
paid notwithstanding the stop of the Exchequer. The
remainder amounting to 12,732l. 13s. 6d. is hereby ordered to
be paid out of the sale of fee farms as follows, viz.:— |

then to do, "and the late Lord Treasurer judging the allowance thereof in that notion might be an ill precedent for
many greater sums depending thereon he obtained only a
verbal order from his Lordship to the said Commissioners (as
is alleged) for payment thereof as for special service done by
him to His Majesty, notwithstanding which the same being
now in super on his account process are issued out against
him." |
