Treasury warrant to the Surveyor General of Crown Lands for a particular of a portion of tithes in the fields of Beckley, co. Oxford, demised in 15 Hy. VIII. for 80 years at 5s. per an. rent, but no rent answered since that lease expired being enjoyed by the impropriator of the parish of Beckley: and also of a decayed tenement within the liberties of the city of Oxford called the Cornish Change burnt down in the time of the late war, of the yearly reserved rent of 8s.: with a view to a lease thereof to Edward Izard, His Majesty's bailiff and collector of the chantry rents, pensions and portions of tithes in the county of Oxford: said Izard covenanting to do his best endeavours at his own cost to record [sic for recover to the Crown] the possession of both said premises and to rebuild the said house. Downing as to the bill of John Oneby, one of the Messengers of the Receipt, for his charges and travail in riding with additional commissions under the Great Seal for putting in execution the Act of Parliament for the subsidy to the several sheriffs as follows, viz. with an additional commission for the city of Westminster to the burgesses of Westminster; and with the like commissions to the several sheriffs of the counties of Wilts, Dorset, Southampton, Sussex, Leicester, Carnarvon, Anglesea, Monmouth and Lancaster. Treasury warrant to Bartholomew Beale and Robert Wilde, Auditors of Imprests. By royal warrant, dated 1666–7, Mar. 4, there is granted to Philip Packer, as [then] deputy Paymaster of the Works, 100l. per an. and 20l. for a clerk. These allowances are entered in the several monthly pay books of the Office of the Works 1666–7, Mar. 1, to 1668, June. You are hereby authorised to give allowance of such payments as entered in the accounts of the Paymaster of the Works. Ibid.

We [the Treasury Lords] are informed by the officers of the Works that divers sums of money have been paid by Hugh May, late Paymaster of the Works, for fees and charges upon the extraordinary receipts of moneys for the repair of Nonsuch House, Hyde Park lead pipes and St. James's new sewer and for other extraordinary services of the Works from 1665, May 1, to 1666, Dec. 31, amounting in the whole to 41l. 15s. 7d. July 6 Treasury warrant to William Hodgson, gent., messenger attending His Majesty's audits in Wales, to levy by distress the arrear of 1,043l. 4s. 911/28d. upon the tenants of the lordship of Ruthin, co. Denbigh, for the fee farm rent of 243l. 8s. 3¼d. per an. issuing thereout and payable to His Majesty, said arrear being unpaid to His Majesty for 11 years ending 1671, Lady Day, "which arrear being by the refractoriness of some of the tenants of the said lordship swoln to that height as the present fee farmer of the said lordship, who is in possession thereof, is utterly unable to levy or pay the same to His Majesty without the assistance of a messenger armed with a sufficient warrant in that behalf, for which the said fee farmer hath earnestly besought us: and forasmuch as we cannot but take notice of the great misdemeanours and particular injuries and affronts put upon our last messenger and warrant sent to levy the said arrears by some of the tenants of the said lordship mentioned in a report of the same made by Sir Charles Harbord . . the 11 June, 1669–70, and whereas some of the tenants and other pretenders to the inheritance of the said lordship have by dilatory promises of a voluntary answering the said arrears kept us hitherto off from taking any legal course for the recovery of the same." July 7 Sir G. Downing to the Receiver of the subsidy of Suffolk. There was a letter sent to you to be communicated to the Commissioners of the county of Suffolk about quickening in the money of the subsidy and employing their endeavours that estates should be assessed to their value as by the Act is directed. My Lords are informed this letter has not been communicated by you. They desire to hear from you as to this. Out Letters General II p. 510.
Same to Arnold Breames. My Lords again request you to forthwith pay into the Exchequer all such moneys as are in your hands of the fees of Cadwallader Jones's office. Ibid.
Same to Mr. Fillingham. Do not fail to attend me to-morrow morning by seven o'clock and to bring a state of what moneys are behind of all the assessments and last poll and upon what counties or Receivers. If you cannot exactly distinguish upon what tax some sums are make it as exact as you can. And at the same time let me know the sum yet behindhand and upon what counties and whether in the hands of Receivers or whom else. Ibid.

My Lords were moved this morning by Sir Robert Atkins about settling the Receivers in the several counties for collecting the new imposition on law proceedings. They have directed him to bring his proposition to us and for us to report thereon to them at Lord Ashley's house next Tuesday how many Receivers we think will be necessary and to model their respective districts and what allowance will be fit to be made to them. Let us meet hereon on Monday at Sir R. Long's house. Also send me your report concerning Sir Robt. Atkins' bond which has lain some time at Sir R. Long's as said Atkins' security cannot be despatched for want of said report. Ibid.
Same to Sir Robt. Atkins to meet him, Sir C. Harbord and Mr. Sherwyn on Monday morning next at Sir R. Long's [to consider of the abovesaid business] of the receivers of the law imposition in the several counties. Bring the proposal with you. Ibid.
Same to the London Excise Farmers and Auditor Birch. You are to forthwith make up a state of the account of the late farm of the London Excise to June 24 last and to present same to my Lords. Further you are forthwith to pay into the Receipt all moneys due from you upon the said farm. And no moneys are to be paid by you upon the accompts of the rent of the present farm until you have paid in all that is due upon the former farm. You are also to make up a similar account for the late farm of the five counties and to pay in what moneys are due thereupon. Ibid, p. 512.
July 7 Sir G. Downing to the Chamberlains of the Exchequer, Sir R. Long, William Wardour, and the four Tellers of the Exchequer, giving them notice of the above letters to the London Excise Farmers. My Lords command you to take care that no bill be thrown down nor any tally struck upon the growing rent of their new farm until the said London Excise Farmers shall have produced to you the abovesaid state of their said farm signed by the auditor and shall have paid into the Exchequer the part thereof accordingly. out Letters General II. p. 512.
