PREFACE
Lord Barrington has been so good as to place at the disposal of the Navy Records Society such papers relating to Admiral the Hon. Samuel Barrington as survive in his possession. These consist of the Admiral's early Order Books, in two volumes, 1747–59 and 1759–71; a Private Letter Book, 1770–99; his Journal and three bound volumes of documents relating to his Leeward Islands Command, 1778–9; some loose letters; and four printed books, viz. the General Sailing and Fighting Instructions, two Signal Books, and an accompanying volume of Instructions.
As none of the Admiral's Public Letter Books survive,
the only letters from Barrington himself that are available
are those preserved amongst the Admiralty records in the
Public Record Office. Certain of these have been included
in the present volume, but in each case with an appropriate
reference to the original.
