Notes and errata
(In the numbering of the lines in these references, headings are always excepted.)
No. 144 (2). The enrolment bears no date, but, by No. 20, it appears that the letters were granted on the 5th Jan.
No. 267. This paper is endorsed in Tunstall's hand “Copy of an instru[ment] callyd [the ber]epot.”
No. 298, 1. 1. For “Cromwell” read “the Council.”
No. 341, margin. For “St. V.” read “St. P.”
No. 459 (p. 190), 1. 15. For “Wyatt” read “Wallop.”
No. 497, 1. 1. For “July” read “June.”
No. 560, 1. 3. After “Westmoreland” insert “Rutland.”
No. 652, 1. 1. For “proposals held” read “the things said to him.”
No. 658. This letter is entered in Vol. X., No. 833, as if to Bourchier earl of Essex, but was more probably addressed to Cromwell in 1540.
No. 692, 1. 1. After “pass” insert “by.”
No. 728, margin. Supply “R. O.”
No. 776 (p. 366). The note “Lord Russell” is wrong. Southampton was the Admiral meant.
No. 781, 1. 4. Dele “and” after “Chancellor”; also for “their” read “his.”
No. 837, 1. 1. For “war” read “fiar.”
No. 939 (p. 465), 1. 2. “Robertus Petow.” So in MS.: but his name was “William.”
No. 953, 1. 3. Laurence Cooke, prior of Doncaster, was not executed as here stated, but received his pardon 2 Oct, following. See Grants in Oct. 1540, No. 7.
No. 1020, note ‡. For “or” read “of.”
No. 1027 (15). Also enrolled on Pat. 32 Hen. VIII. p. 6, m. 38, but almost illegible.
No. 1030 (41, 1. 1). For “my” read “your.”
INDEX.
Brandenburg, Albert. For “Alciades” read “Alcibiades,” after the bracket supply “Margrave of,” and add the reference “412 n.”
Cooke, Laur. Dele words “and executed.” See above, No. 953.
Este, Francéso d'. Read Francesco d'.
Guise, Claude of. For “Claude” read “Francis,” and instead of “third” read “eldest.” Historians are generally confused about these two brothers, owing to the title of Aumale. The explanation seems to be that Francis as eldest son was by birth count of Aumale, was created duke of Aumale by King Henry II. in March 1647, and obtained that Aumale should be erected into a duché-pairie in favour of his brother Claude in July of the same year.
Henneage, Sir Thomas. For p. “567” read p. “568.”
