December 1691

December 55. Memorial from the Spanish Ambassador (?). Marland was given by patent of Charles I to the first Lord Baltimore as a place of refuge for Roman Catholics and by them it was first inhabited and cultivated. Its first law accorded religious toleration to all except Jews and Turks. Since the last change those who enjoyed toleration there under have seized all the chapels that were built by and belonged to Roman Catholics, and expelled all the priests, except one whom they have imprisoned and prevented from exercising his office. We know that these outrages have been committed without the knowledge or order of the King and Queen, who without doubt, when they are informed of these severities will forbid the Deputy Governors to molest the Catholics. 2/3 p. Endorsed: Recd. from the Spanish Ambassador. French. Enclosed: two copies of:—
I, II. A law of Maryland concerning Religion. Printed. [C.O. 5/718 ff.92–95]
