51. John Coode to Col. Nathaniel Bacon. Yours of 29 Jan. received. Except as regards the shipping I have had no satisfactory answer to my 2 former letters. You do not mention Major Sewell who investigated the murder; Mr. Josephs and others are at large; `priest Hubbard' is with his papist patron, Mr. Brent, in Stafford County. We can make good our charge and therefore I hope that neither the King's enemies nor Papists will be countenanced. When you fled hither from rebellion in Virginia you were sheltered by Protestants and I lay three months upon the water in your defence: As your loyalty drove you thence, so I beg you to believe that it is the enormity of their offences that has driven these fugitives to you. I repeat the requests of my former letter. If you doubt the legality of this government, the answer is that it is the only one; for the late government, being papist, is disabled by the King's proclamation. Signed Jno Coode, commander of the military affairs in Maryland. Postscript: The messenger misrepresented the date of my letter. 1 p. Endorsed; Recd. 14 April 1690 from Mr. Coode. Printed in Archives of Maryland, Vol.8, pp. 168 169. [C.O. 5/718 f.83]

Feb. 18 53. Acknowledgement by Capt. Nicholson that he has received from William Blathwayt a letter under the signet to the government of Maryland which is to be forwarded by him on his arrival in Virginia. Signed Fr. Nicholson. ¼ p. Printed in Archives of Maryland, Vol.8, p.169. [C.O. 5/718 f.78]
