March 1689

March 27 2. Declaration of Henry Jowles and 15 others, inhabitants of Maryland. There have lately been great disturbances in the province, particularly in Calvert and Charles Counties, where the people have combined to defend themselves against an imaginary plot, contrived, as was supposed, by the Roman Catholics who invited the Indians to join with them. This plot has been discovered to be purely imaginary, founded by the artifice of some ill-minded persons wishing to create a disturbance. The intrigues arose in Stafford County in Virginia whence certain persons in Maryland have been incited to disaffection. Rumours of the coming of the Indians, of their presence in forts at the head of Patuxent, and of their landing at Mattapany Sewall, at Cowpoyul, on the Clifto, at Choptico and elsewhere are false, and there is no evidence of any design on their part to molest the people of the country. The matter has been examined with the Deputy Governor and a report submitted to the magistrates and people of the country. [Copy.] 1½ p. Inscribed: Recd. from the Earl of Shrewsbury 31 Dec.
