PARISHES AND CHAPELS

London parishes

Before the Reformation most London parishes had numerous endowments of lands or quit-rents for chantries, obits, and other purposes. These 'superstitious' endowments were transferred to the Crown on the suppression of the chantries in 1548. Only a few parishes have accounts or minutes dating from before 1548, but the endowments of most parishes were listed in 1546 (PRO, LR2/241–3) and 1548 (PRO, E301/34: London and Middlesex Chantry Certificate, 1548, ed. C. J. Kitching, LRS 16, 1980). Accounts for the lands of suppressed chantries in the Crown's hands from 1548 begin in PRO, SC6/Edw 6/293, mm. 40–106, and continue in subsequent accounts; see also PRO, LR2/244. Further surveys of former chantry lands still held by the Crown, and of rents reserved in grants of such lands, were made in 1550 (PRO, SC12/38/57– 9), 1619 (PRO, SP14/106), and 1664 (PRO, SC11/957). In the following descriptions of parish records, the heading 'Estate before 1548' identifies the estate as recorded in the first 3 sources listed above (PRO, LR2/241– 3, E301/34, and SC6/Edw 6/293). Kitching, Chantry Certificate, prints abstracts from E301/34 with cross-references to LR2/241–3. Not all the estates listed were forfeited to the Crown: endowments for church upkeep, education, and other non-superstitious uses were retained by the parish concerned. For records concerning the estates of suppressed chantries, see 438.

After 1548, most parishes held, in addition to any non-superstitious endowments they had retained, some property associated with the church or churchyard. These holdings were soon augmented by new bequests and donations. Churchwardens' accounts and vestry minutes of the later 16th and 17th centuries are often not specific as to the location of parish properties; in some cases deeds and churchwardens' remembrancers provide a guide. Parish records contain much material not strictly relevant to this survey, and as a general rule only those containing information relating to parish properties, or lists of inhabitants, are listed below. The 'business relating to parish houses' noted for vestry minutes consists of decisions to let, buy or sell, view, or repair parish property. A few parishes have no surviving records of this kind before 1670.

Unless otherwise stated, all parish records listed below are in GL, described in the subject catalogue under L 92. Parts of some archives (21, 38, 42, 103, 156, 157) were catalogued on deposit as GL Additional MSS: for a general description of this class, see 460. See also GL handlists Churchwardens' accounts of parishes within the City of London (2nd edn. 1969), Vestry Minutes of parishes within the City of London (2nd edn. 1964), London rate assessments and inhabitants' lists in GL and CLRO (2nd edn. 1968), and Parish registers, pt. 1 (4th edn. 1969).

Parishes are listed here in the order in which they appear in the key (pp. xviii–xix, above); modern surnames are given in parentheses, as are the parish code numbers.

384. Churches and chapels outside london

A number of churches and chapels outside London held property in the city, usually chantry endowments lost in 1548. There is no systematic way of identifying all of these, but the following sources provide some guide. Collegiate churches are treated under 'Religious houses' (70–274).

a. Calendar of Wills proved and enrolled in the Court of Husting, London, 1258–1688, ed. R. R. Sharpe (1889–90).

Endowments in perpetuity are recorded for the following churches and chantries: Ash, Kent (125); Biddenham, Beds. (53, 123); Boylestone, Derbys. (Cheap, Vintry); Bromley, Kent (137); Chinnor, Oxon. (unspec.); Coventry, fraternity of Holy Trinity, St. Mary, and St. John the Baptist (Smithfield); Farthinghoe, Northants. (81); Finedon ('Thyngden'), Northants. (92); chapel of 'Grenge' Manor, nr. Gillingham, Kent (unspec.); Hellesdon, Norf. (9); Hitchin, Herts. (12); Hornchurch, Essex (58); Sevenoaks, Kent (4); Shottesbrook, Berks. (56); St. Olave's, Southwark, Surrey (51); Standon, Herts. (36, 88, Broad Street); Strood, Kent (93, 125).

b. Survey of ecclesiastical property in the city of London, 1392, in The Church in London 1375–1392, ed. A. K. McHardy (LRS 13, 1977).

The following held city property: Colney chapel, Shenley, Herts. (93); vicarage of Fulham, Middx. (Langbourn ward); chapel of Watton, Herts. (Walbrook ward); rector of Widmerpool, Notts. (Castle Baynard ward).

c. Chantry certificates. Published editions are listed in Texts and Calendars, ed. E. L. C. Mullins, (RHS: vol. 1, 1958, reprinted with corrections 1978; vol. 2, 1983). These editions are of varying value, and not all are indexed. Neither they nor PRO originals for churches outside London have been searched systematically, but there are London references in: Kent Chantries, ed. A. Hussey (Kent Arch. Soc. Records Branch, 1936); London and Middlesex Chantry Certificate, ed. C. J. Kitching (LRS 16, 1980); Sussex Chantry Records, ed. John E. Ray (Sussex Rec. Soc., 1930).

d. PRO, SC12/37/13: survey of collegiate chantry lands in London and Middlesex, c. 1548; refers to colleges of Fotheringhay and Irthlyngborough (157, 169) and chantries of Farthinghoe and Finedon, Northants. (see a, above).
