LONDON LIVERY COMPANIES

Fraternities and associations of Londoners for various purposes existed in the early Middle Ages, but it was not until the later 14C that some of them became corporate bodies and began to acquire lands, in London and elsewhere, with which to support their activities. Many companies holding lands for chantry purposes lost them in 1548, or sold other lands in order to redeem rents and charges, but continued to build up their estates thereafter. Widespread acquisition of city properties, however, had virtually ceased by c. 1600. On the eve of the Great Fire the estates of the largest companies comprised properties in more than 40 parishes. The lesser companies, however, may have held property or rents in only one or two parishes, and some had no freehold estate at all, leasing or renting accommodation for meetings and dinners.

The records of the 83 companies which existed in or before 1666 were searched for references to property-holding up to that date; 54 archives contained such material. A few companies lost their records in the Fire but otherwise survival has been good. The records consist principally of deeds and wills, some registers and lease books, rentals and accounts, minute books, plans, and surveys; in the case of large estates acquired piecemeal the coverage changes almost from year to year. The records of the majority of the companies are in GL, although individual items may be resumed by companies from time to time, and occasionally further items, having come to light at company halls, are sent to GL. See GL, Guide to the archives of city Livery Companies and related organisations in Guildhall Library (pamphlet, 1982). The Report of the Royal Commission on the City of London Livery Companies (C. 4073; 3 vols., 1884) is a useful introduction to the companies' endowments and charitable obligations.

Descriptions of the archives, including those of the 'Great Twelve' companies, and records kept outside GL, are arranged alphabetically by company.
