I John Yardley of the parisshe of Sanct Laurence, [Essex], bequeth my soule to God and to Our Lady Sanct Mary and to all the holy company of hevyn, my body to be buried in the church of Sancte Laurence. I bequeth to the hye aulter for my offerynges and tithes necligently forgoten, 3 shepe, for my fordrove 2 shepe. I bequeith to Agnes, my wiff, Byknaker with 105 shepe also 20 kyne, Cane with 200 shepe or ellis 10 li. I bequeth to John, my eldest sone, Estnewland full storyd. I will that the incresyng therof to fynd my 3 children with the lond of my eldest sone, also I will that John Denby, myne executor, receyve thes 3 children att Michelmes next comyng, also that the said John Denby take possession of Estnewland at Michelmes next to the behof of my eldest sone till he be of 20 winters of age. I bequeth to William my sone, a tenement with thappurtenaunce callid Nocke lying in Layndun if my sorender may stond, and if my sorender may not stond than William have of the said Nock 40 marke. I will that John Denby receyve this 40 marke to delyver the said William at 20 yer of age. I bequeth to Thomas, my sone, 20 marke at the age of 21 yer, to my doughter Jone, 10 marke, to Agnes, my dowghter 10 marke, to my yongest doughter 10 marke. I will that if any of my daughteris dey or they be maried that iche of them be others heyres. I bequeith to the child that my wif gois with, if it be a dowter 10 marke, if it be a sone 10 li. I bequeith to a prist to syng for my fader and moder and for me for a yer 10 marke, also to a prist to sing 5 masses 20d. The residue of all my goodis I gyve to my executours to be disposed for the helth of my soule or ellis to such thynges as is necessary and my executours to have ech one 20s., and my oversear as myche. I ordeyn my executours Agnes, my wif, and John Denby and Sir Henry Crosse to be oversear.

[I Sir Geoffrey Hancoke, priest, bequeath my soul to Almighty God, to Blessed Mary and to all the celestial company, and my body to be buried in the cemetery of St. John the Baptiste upon Walbroke, London. Secondly I will that 15 masses should be celebrated in the forsaid church and 15 in the house of Friars Minors in Bedford. I bequeath to the college of Plasshey in Essex (fn. 1) where formerly I was a fellow 20s. I bequeath to Alice Frend, my keeper, a pair of stockings, to Agnes Hancoke my lined cloak. The residue of my goods I bequeath to Robert Wilton my sister's husband whom I make my sole executor. Witnesses, Henry Simondes, John Pyne, clerk, and William Beverley.]

I Sir William Beowpre, prest, of the parishe of Saynt Mary Wollechirche and syngyng in the parisshe of Saynt Petres in Cornehill, bequeith my sowle unto Allmyghti God, my Maker and Redemer, and to the Glorious Virgyne His Moder Saynt Mary and to all the holy company of sayntes in hevyne, my body to be buried in Saynt Mary Wollchirche. I make my suster, Cecely Mordon, myne sole executor to dispose for my soule ther as she tynkis best, my dettes paid and my funerallis done. I be [sic] alle to her soly. I bequeith unto my broder, Edmund Pelton, the best coveryng of my bedd, to my suster, Elisabeth, a bolster of twyll, to my brother Willyam Oghtryche wyffe a cupbord, to William Dale Gowreworthe a coverled, to the wiff of the same William Dale, a throwyn chire. I will ther be spent att my buryall 20s. The residewe of my goodes I gyve to Maister Bell, Sir John Archier, Sir Gabriell Halehed, Sir Andrewe Hylton, which I make myne executores they to dispose for the helth of my soule, and supervisor of this my will I make Edmund Pelton and William Oghtriche. Witnesse, Maister Pacoke, Sir John Archier, Sir Andrew Hilton with other moo.

I Sir Richard Leyskirtt, parson of the parishe of Widford, (fn. 2) bequeith my soule unto God Almyghty, Our Lady Sanct Mary and to all the sanctis of hevyn, my bodye to be burid in the churche yerde of the parishe of Stowe. I make myn executor Sir Robert Jonson and to hyme I bequeith all my goodis and he to bringe me in eirth and pay my dettis and, if ony over plus be, he to bestowe itt for my soule as he shall thynke most necessary. I bequeith to my Lord Abbot of Goggishalle (fn. 4) and to his brethern to be buried within the church of ther monastery and to be brother of their chapter house and to be praid for perpetually, 6 li. 13s. 4d. I bequeith to the church of Inworth 20s. I bequeith to my nevy, William Tone, 20s., to my nevy, Nicholas Tone, 20s. to every of my sister Johan doughters, Margaret, Elisabeth and Margery, 20s., to every of my sister Margaret children William and Margaret 20s. I bequeith to an honest prist, a student of the Universite of Cambrige to pray for my soule and all Cristen soulis a hol yer 6 li. 13s. 4d. I bequeith to my god doughter, Johan Reiston, 3s. 4d., to my goddoughter, Katerine Stace 3s. 4d., to my godson, Robert Smyth, and to my goddoughter his doughter, 6s. 8d., to my goddouter Maister Danyell dowghter 6s. 8d., to my godson, Maister Harlston sone, 6s. 8d. [I Robert Pacoke, clerk, bequeath my soul to God the Father Almighty, to the Blessed Mary and to all the saints of God, and my body to be buried in ecclesiastical sepulture. I bequeath to the house of Saint Thomas of Acon (fn. 5) 3s. 4d. I bequeath to Jesus College, in Cambridge, 3s. 4d. I bequeath to a poor scholar born in Newcastle on Tine or in Northumbria for an exhibition in Cambrige 40s. I bequeath 7 books called Nicholaus de Libra cum Glosa ordinaria (fn. 6) to the library of the church of St. Nicholas (fn. 7) in the forsaid town. I bequeath to the Friars of the Dominican order in the forsaid town for a trentall for the souls of my father and mother 10s. I bequeath to the Friars Observants to pray for my soul 6s. 8d. I bequeath to the church of St. Nicholas in the forsaid town 3s. 4d. I bequeath to Robert Lane, stockfysh monger 6s. 8d. to Geritrudo Barthelmewe 3s. 4d., to Elisabeth Chertsey 3s. 4d. I bequeath to William Stanton, stokfysh monger, 10s. that he should be the supervisor of my testament. I give half of the residue of all my goods to Keterine Norwood and the other part to Isabelle Harman, my kinsman, and to John Pacoke of Newcastle, father of Isabelle, whom I make my executors. [I Sir Robert Hornbe bequeath my soul to Almighty God, my Creator and Redeemer, to the Blessed Mary and to all the company of heaven, and my body to be buried in the church of St. John Baptist on Walbroke, London. I bequeath to the foresaid church a torch. I bequeath to Christofer Hornbe, my brother, my two best cloaks, to Richard Hornbe, my kinsman, a second best cloak. The residue of my goods I bequeath to Katerine Jenyns whom I make my sole executor to dispose in works of charity as it shall seem best to her for my soul and the souls of all the faithful departed. I Sir Richard Lorchyn bequeith my soule to God Almyghty, to Our Blissid Lady and to all the holy company of hevyn and my body to be buried within the chauncell of Sancte Margaret within the parishe churche of Berkyng, as ny the sepulcur or grave of myn unkill, Maister Thomas Burr, as I may be laid conveniently. I will that 20 marke shalbe bestowid of a sewte of vestimentes gevyn to the churche of Berkyng. I will that 10 marke be gevyn to a priste to syng for me and my frindis by the space of a yer wher my executours shall thynke most best, tobe begunne within the space of 2 yeris after my departyng att the fardest. I gif to my sister Beatrice, 5 li. and to Richerd Laurence 5 li., and if my sister Beatrice or Richerd Laurence depart afor they be maried or of lawfull age the 5 li. to be devyded in evyne porcions to the children of my unkill, Richerd Burr and Thomas Burr. I gyve to my cussen, Kateryne, and to my cussen, Agnes, myn unkilles dowters iche of them 20s., and to my cussen, John Richerd, and Agnes, the children of my cussyn, Thomas Burr, to everyone of them 20s., if it may be convenyently performyd. The remanyng of my goodis I will shall remayn in the handis of my unkill, Richerd Burr, and hyme I make myne executor and my cussyn, Thomas Burr, iche of them to have 40s. for their labor, and Maister Vicar (fn. 10) my overseer. I Sir John Morrys, (fn. 12) parson of Wodham Water, bequeith my soule to God Almyghty, my Creatour, and to Our Lady Sanct Mary and to all the company of hevyn, my body to be berid in the cloister of All Halowes the Mor in Temystret. I will 6s. 8d. be distribute to powr people at my buriall in bred and drynke. I bequeith to Walter Walopp a blake gowne, to John Walopp my secund gowne, to John Draper, my tawny cote. The residue of all my goodis movable and immovable, I gif to Maister John Heton, prist, to dispose for my soule helth after his discressyon., the which John Heton I make my sole executor. Witnesse, Sir Thomas Chanon and Water Walopp.

51. [f. 25] Sir Robert Tyde. 18 Oct. 1517. [Latin and English.]

[I Robert Tyde, chaplain, bequeath my soul to Almighty God, to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to all saints, and my body to be buried in the chapel of the Blessed Mary within the church of St. John the Baptist of Halywell. (fn. 13) I leave to the high altar in the foresaid church 20d. The residue of all my goods I bequeath to Sir Robert Male, priest, whom I make my executor to dispose for the health of my soul as seems best to him. Witnesses, Robert Cristian, Nicholas Genkynson with others.]

Item I gif to my broder, John Tyde, a gowne of medley tawny, to my sister, Isabell, a blake gowne and a sylver spone, to my broder, Thomas Tyd, a violett gowne with a hood, a fetherbedd with all that long and perteyne therto, 2 sylver sponis, a small girdill harnest with silver, all my laten and my pewter, that is to say 3 kandilstykkes, 2 pewter disshes, 2 pewter sawcers, 2 pewter pottis, one of a pynt and a nother of half a pynt, a chaffer of brasse and 2 small bassons of pewter.

52. [f. 25] Sir Robert Dowse. 27 Dec. 1517.

I Robert Dowse, prest, bequeith my sowle unto Allmyghty God, to that Blissid Lady Sanct Mary and to all the holy company of hevyn, my body to be buried in the cherchyard of Sanct Antonyne (fn. 15) in London. I bequeith to the parson of the forseid churche for my mortuary my best gowne. I bequeith to the curate of the same churche 20d., to Thomas Spicer, the clerke, 12d. I bequeith to Annes Mores, 3s. 4d., to Johan Axe, 12d. I make myne executours Sir John Atkynson and Sir Robert Thorpe, prestes, and I gyve to thaem 6s. 8d. to se that my will be fulfillid, my body honestly burid and my dettis paid. The residewe of my goodis I put to thair disposicion. Wytnesse, Maister Lancaster, the parson of the same churche, and Thomas Spycer, clerke of the same.

53. [f. 25v.] Sir Henry Lucas. 6 Aug. 1517. (fn. 17) [Latin and English.]

[I Henry Lucas, priest, bequeath my soul to God the Father Almighty, to Blessed Mary and all His saints, and my body to be buried in the cemetery of St. Olave in Old Jewry, London, next the cross on the south side between the cross and the processional way. I entreat my brothers of the Fraternity of the Trinity that they of their charity should come to pay their respects warmly clad, and I will that at my obsequies the curate should have 4d., and please to keep silence, and the clerk 2d., and for burying me 8d. Also I wish that the small bell which rings at first mass should be rung quietly for an hour and he that rings it to have 2d. in reward. Further I wish 4 torches from the Fraternity of Mary in that place and I will pay for them. And that others may copy me I do not wish for either candles or tolling of bells. (fn. 18) Also I bequeath 10s. to the poor for coals for wintertime. I bequeath to Leonard Swetyng, son of Thomas Swetyng, founder, (fn. 19) twenty pounds sterling to continue at school and if he should not frequent school but should be absent for a week or 12 days in a quarter, except he is ill, then I will that the said twenty pounds should be given in alms to the poor, to prisoners and the sick at the discretion of my executors; and he should continue at school for seven years after my death and afterwards at writing school for one year until he can write well. I bequeath to the wife Bakon formerly living in the parish of St. Margaret, Lothbery, 12d. Of their charity I ask William Mathew and Thomas Swetyng to see my will faithfully performed and my will also is that William Mathew should have power and custody of the said twenty pounds to the use abovesaid. The residue of all my goods wherever they may be found I will that the said executors should have and dispose at their pleasure and to the profit of my soul. 54. [f. 26] Sir Stephan Guyshard, rector of Stifford. 13 Dec. 1517.

I Syr Stephyn Guyshard (fn. 21) of the paroch of Styfford, Essex, bequeith my soule to God Allmighty, Our Lady Sainct Mary and to all sainctes in hevyn, my body to be buried in the chauncell of Our Lady of Styfford. I bequeith to Poules pardon, 5s. I bequeith to every prest that cometh to my beriall 6d. I will that 4 prestys ber me to the church and they to have for their labour in money a pece 12d. beside their mass. I will that Edward Johannes bye 2 braunches of latton of 3 tapers a pece shortely after my departing, one to be set before Our Lady and the other before Sainct Tebote and I forgyff hym all dewties betwyn hym and me. I bequeith 3 tapers of a li. a pece, oon to burne before Oure Lady and the other before Sainct Tebot and the third before Sainct Katheryn, and in money to kepe them yerly burnyng of the holy days at mess and other divine service 24s. I bequeith a taper of 4 li. waxe to be sett before the sepulcre and in money to kiepe it yerly, 6s. 8d. I bequeith to Johan Bere in money 20s., and my best gown and a litle brasse pott, a pair of sheetes, a spruse cheste, a trowgh and a litle hogge. I bequeith to Stephen Tye in money 6s. 8d., and my other gowne. I bequeith to Esabell Symson 20d., to Stephyn, the son of John Stephyn, 13s. 4d., to Marget Stephyn, 6s. 8d., to Mary Browne, 3s. 4d., to Stephyn Wayt, 6d., to Thomas Wye, 20d., to Herry Maior, 6d., to John Ranold, 6d. I bequeith to Sir John Hermon a tabyll clothe, a towell, a pair of sheetes and 2 pewtyr dysshes, to Sir Robert Dodson, parson of Litell Thorroke, 2 brasse pottes and 3 candelstickes and my fetherbed with the bolster, to Sir William Wood, the parson of North Wokendon, (fn. 22) my spruse tabyll and my cobord. I will thatt the wyndows of Our Ladye chapell be lettest (fn. 23) and the weste wyndowe be glased. The residewe of all my goodes I put in the disposition of Sir William Wood, parson of North Wokendon, and Sir Robert Dodson of Litill Thorroke, the which William and Robert I make myn executours. [Note that this testament was not proved because both the executors therein named on 11 Feb. 1518 in the presence of Master Hedde refused to act. Their renunciation was accepted and it was decreed in the presence of Thomas Gotson that the said Guisshard should be treated as intestate.]

[I John Hormon, chaplain of the church of St. Magnus, London, sick in body but sane in mind, bequeath my soul to Almighty God, to the Blessed Mary and to all saints and my body to be buried in the cloister of the said church. I bequeath to the mother church of St. Paul, 8d., to the Confraternity of Blessed Mary in the said church of St. Magnus, 3s. 4d. I bequeath to Sir Herrison 4s., and to Sir Richard 4s., and as much to Sir Henry, priest, celebrating in the said church, that they should pray for my soul and the souls of all the faithful departed. The residue of all my goods I bequeath to Master William Clayton whom I make my executor that he should dispose as seems best to him to please God and to profit my soul. I bequeithe to the highe awter of the same church 12d., to the Freres Observauntes of Rychmonde to pray for my soule, my fadre and my modre and all Cristen soules 10s. I will that ther be seid in the paryssh church of Northwich in the Countie of Chester wher I was borne a trentall of masses by some honest prest to be admytted by my frindes ther, I bequeith for the same 10s. I bequeith to Sir Richard Woode, parysshe prest of Sainct Donstones aforeseid, my saten typpett to thentent that he may pray for my soule, my fader and my moder and all Cristen soules. I bequeith to Johan Barlowe, my sister, yf she wilbe of good and honest lyvyng, 40s., and my gowne that ys lyned with purple saten of cipers, and yf she be the contrarie I will that the gowne be solde and the money therof comyng and the 40s. be bestowed by the discretion of myn executours for my soule, my fadre and moder and all Cristen soules. I bequeith to Sir John Acson, my cosyn, my medley tawny gowne furred with blak lambe, a fetherbedd, a bolster, two pair of my best blankettes, a covering of imagery of tappestarie werke, a hanging of grene say and 13s. 4d., so that he leve by the space of 12 monethes, and yf it fortune hym to deceesse within the same 12 monethes then all the premisses shall remayne to Henry Bostoke and his wyff. I bequeith to Sir Richard Doff, prest, half my bookes such as he shall thynk convenient except my 3 portyses and masse boke, my two best cappys [sic] I bequeith the other half of my bookes to the next of my kyne that wilbe preste, the seid 3 portyses, a masse boke and a surplesse. I bequeith to reparacions of the said altar 20d., and to every pore howse holder after the discrecion of myne executours, 4d., within the said parisshe. I bequeith to every one of the comyns (fn. 24) that will cum unto my berieng 6d. a pece for every preste, to the coke and the butler of the same commyns 4d. a pece. I give to the hygh altar of Sanct Cristoferus for my tithes forgotton 8d. I give to Elisabeth Warner my silver spone with a mayden hedde weing 2 unces and more. I gif to Robert Clerke, my child, all my bookes and my clavicordis. The residewe of all other my goodes I bequeith to Elyn Clerke, prentis with William Galtroppys whiff, whome I make my sole executrix of this my last will, and if she dye then I will that Robert Clerke, hir brother, shall enjoye all suche goodes as be then left to fynd hyme to scole, and if the seid Robert deceasse then I gyve all suche goodes to William Galtrope and to Felice his wiff, to dispose for my soule and all Cristen sowlis, the which William I make overseer of this my will. I bequeith a trentall to be don for my sowle at Sainct Cristofers in London, amonges my brothers and they to have for doyng it 10s. I will that a prest sing for my soule and the sowlys of my fryndes and for all Cristyn soulys, in the church of Mary Magdalyn Est Ham a hoole yer. I geve to Thomas Guge and William Guge, my god childerne 9 li. 6s. 8d., by like porcions, to William Guge, a silver spone that is in my chambre att London, to every godchild that I have 4d. a pece. I bequeith to my nyce Agnes Guge, all my rayment and all the apparell of my chambre as well beddyng as hangynges and all other stuff. I bequeith to Sir William Dykonson for wryting this my will 20d. It is so that I am gretly in dett and daunger and alby the meanys of untrue peple as my por kynnesman Richard Beerd knowes welle to whatt persons that I am dettour unto. Thus I protest her and afor God that and I wer of power and of habilite every man that I am indettid to shuld be weele content and paid. But thus it is that God has visite me with sekenes that I am not hable but to putt me in the mercy of God. And if that I may be sparyde 1 yer to continue her in this wrechid world I shall have competent to satisfye every mane. The forseid Richard Beerd I make my executor of my pore wille and after his discrecion to order that pore stuff that I have as ny as he canne for dischargyng of conscience. I gyve to my fader and moder my best gowne, to my moder my best short gowne, unto my suster my long blewe gowne, to my fader a jakett, unto my fader and moder a pair of shetys and a pair of blankettes. I gyve unto Barthilmewe Ody, vicar of Powlles, a bason of pewter and my best surples. I gyve to Christofer Boryng my hanger or woodknyf. I gife to the porter of Sancte Thomas Gate my best dublett. The residue of all my goodes after my dettis paid, my funerall expences doone, I gyve to myne executours to do with itt their pleasur and to do for my soule as they shall thynke best. [I John Gyffresone, priest, bequeath my soul to God the Father Almighty, to the merits of the Passion of Jesus Christ, to the Blessed Mary and to all saints, and my body to be buried in the cemetery of St. Paul's, London. I give to the high altar of St. Thomas the Apostle 12d., to the high altar of St. John Walbroke 12d. I give to each priest 15 marks to pray and celebrate for my soul and the souls of my parents, of William and John and of William Warman and of Alice, his wife, and for the souls of those for whom I am obliged to pray in the parish church of Thurysbye in the County of Comerland by the space of three years, so that, except when they fall on solemn festivals, he should say each Wednesday mass for the dead and requiem, and each Friday mass of the five wounds of Jesus Christ, and he may have the 15 marks even if he is overcome by infirmity but not if he is detected in open sin, then another should receive it in his place. I bequeath to the parish church of Thurysbye a chalice to the value of 4 marks. I give to the Community of Jesus next Douegate, (fn. 41) London, 8s.
