Preface
The London Record Society is indebted to the Greater London Council not only for permission to publish the wills and inventories in its custody contained in this volume, but also for a grant towards the cost of printing. Thanks are also due to the Corporation of London for permission to print the information in Appendixes 5 and 6, extracted from FitzJames's Register, now in the Guildhall Library.
Miss Darlington has asked me to thank on her behalf, firstly, the students of her palaeography class who made the initial transcription of many of the wills and especially Miss Freda Mayes, Mrs. Diana Poulton and Mrs. Angela Salmon; secondly, many people who have given help or advice: Professor S. T. Bindoff, Professor A. G. Dickens, Mr. A. G. Watson, Dr. J. Conway Davies, Mr. Lawrence Tanner, Dr. A. E. J. Hollaender and Miss Joan Gibbs; thirdly, several of her fellow archivists in different parts of the country who have helped to identify obscure place names; and finally, Miss Alison Reeve and other colleagues in the Greater London Record Office.
