PREFACE
The London Record Society is indebted to the Corporation of London not only for permission to publish this calendar of records in its custody, but also for a substantial grant towards the cost of printing it.
The text is based upon a calendar made for the Corporation of London Records Office by Dr. Chew before the Second World War. She kindly offered to revise the text for the Society but was prevented from doing so by a serious accident. Dr. Chew and I would like to thank the many people who have given advice in the preparation of this volume, and in particular Mr. Michael J. Chandler, who has calendared a number of newly discovered documents; Miss Joan Gibbs, who has read the whole text in typescript and proof; Mr. P. E. Jones, who has given us the benefit of his vast knowledge of City records; Dr. D. W. Sutherland, who read the introduction and made a number of suggestions, and Mrs. Caroline Barron, who brought to our notice several references to assizes in the Journals of the court of common council. However, the final responsibility for both the text and the index is mine.
