Blue Boar (The)

On the east side of Fish Street Hill, adjoining King's Head Court.

It was so called before the Fire and had been devised to the poor of the parish of St. Margaret, Fish Street Hill.

Part of the site was not rebuilt after the Fire, but was taken for the enlargement of the street, and the new buildings erected extended over adjoining land (St. Margaret, Fish Street Hill, Rep. End. Ch. 1903, p. 4).

Blue Boar Court

South out of Chick Lane and west to Hide's Rents, in Farringdon Ward Without (O. and M. 1677-Strype, 1755).

In O. and M. there is no passage into Hide's Rents. There were steps leading up into the Court.

The site is now covered by the Smithfield Markets.

Blue Boar Court

East out of Friday Street at No.54 (P.O. Directory). In Bread Street Ward.

First mention : O. and M. 1677. "Blew Bore Court" in Strype.

In 24 Eliz. 1581, a messuage in Friday Street is described as late called the signe of the "Blewe Boore" and now called the "Bolte and Tunne" (Lond. I. p.m. III. 54).

Called the Bolt and Tun, 1638-9 (L. and P. Chas. I. 1638-9, p. 370).

Named after the sign.

Blue Boar Head Alley, Court

North out of Barbican, in Cripplegate Ward Without (Strype, 1720-Boyle, 1799). "Blew Bore's Head Court" in Strype's map of the Ward.

Seems to be called "Cannon Court" in O. and M. 1677.

The site is now occupied by offices and business houses.

Blue Boar Stable Yard

West out of Little Moorfields. In Cripplegate Ward Without (Rocque, 1746).

The site is now covered by Moorgate Street Station and the Metropolitan Railway lines.

Blue Bore Inn

North out of Aldgate High Street at No.30 (O. and M. 1677-O.S. 1848-51). In Portsoken Ward.

"Blue Boar Inn" without Aldgate mentioned temp. Jas. I. (Chanc. Proc.).

In Horwood's map, 1799, it is called the "Boar Inn."

No. 30 is now occupied by the British Shoe Co. and the old inn and yard no longer exist.

Removed for the formation of Throgmorton Avenue, etc.

First mention : Lockie, 1810.

Blunderbus Alley

South out of Little Thomas Apostle to Great St. Thomas Apostle, east of the churchyard. In Vintry and Cordwainer Wards (O. and M. 1677-Boyle, 1799).

Site rebuilt in the 19th century.

Blyth's Buildings

North out of Lamb Alley, in Bishopsgate Ward Without (Elmes, 831-O.S. 1848-51).

Former names : "Blyth's Court" (Lockie, 1816, or "Buildings," in Elmes, 1831). "Lamb Court" (q.v.).

The site is now occupied by Liverpool Street Station and the Railway lines.

The name suggests an owner or builder.

Former name : "Horshooe Alley." Burial Register, St. Olave Hart Street, 1664-5, transcribed in Povah's Annals, p. 190. "Horshoe Alley" (O. and M. 1677).

Site now occupied by John Street.

It seems now to form an eastern entrance into Carpenters' Hall.
