II. PRIVILEGIUM ÆðELBERTI REGIS.

In Christi nomine. Æðelbertus Rex, (fn. 1) Deo inspirante, pro anime sue remedio dedit Episcopo Mellito (fn. 2) terram que appellatur Tillinegeham, ad Monasterii sui solatium, scilicet, Monasterii Sancti Pauli Apostoli Doctoris gentium: et Ego Rex Æðelbertus ita firmiter concedo tibi presuli Mellito potestatem ejus habendi et possidendi, ut in perpetuum in Monasterii utilitate permaneat. Siquis vero contradicere temptaverit hanc donationem, anathema et excommunicatus sit ab omni societate Christiana usque ad satisfactionem. Qua de re Ego, Episcopus Mellitus, una cum Rege Æðelberto, Hunfredum Episcopum subscribere rogavi. Signum manus Hunfredi, Episcopi. Signum manus Letharii, Episcopi. Signum manus Æbane. Signum manus Æþelþaldi. Signum manus Æscþine. Et aliorum multorum.

  • 2. Mellitus, consecrated Bishop by Augustine Archbishop of Canterbury in 604: he accepted the Bishopric which Æthelberht had established at London; from which he was expelled in 616, when the sons of Saeberht, King of the East Saxons, relapsed into paganism.
