APPENDIX

Residents in 1871

This table is primarily based upon the census taken on 2-3 April 1871, and presents information about all the inhabitants of all completed and occupied houses in certain streets, as they were on the night of the census. The streets are Cromwell Gardens, Cromwell Place, Elvaston Place, Queen's Gate, Queen's Gate Gardens, Queen's Gate Place, Queen's Gate Terrace, Queensberry Place, Stanhope Gardens, that part of Cromwell Road within the area covered by the present volume, and Nos. 37–59 (odd) Gloucester Road. Except in Cromwell Road and Gloucester Road, any house in the above streets which is not listed in this table was, at the time of the census, either unbuilt or unoccupied.

All information printed in Roman type is derived from the census schedules. All information in italic type is taken from other sources, chiefly Frederick Boase, Modern English Biography (7 vols., 1965 ed.), the Dictionary of National Biography, The Complete Peerage, ed. G.E.C., the Post Office Directories, and The Aristocracy of London Part I, Kensington, 1863 (B.M. pressmark PP 2505 ae).

The following abbreviations are used: b, bachelor; dem, house now demolished; D.L., Deputy Lieutenant; m, married man, wife also resident; ma, married man or woman, spouse absent; sp, spinster; w, widow or widower. An asterisk denotes that one of the servants was a governess. When the total household is greater than the sum total of the persons enumerated in the preceding columns, the difference represents the presence of unrelated visitors on the night of the census.

The evidence contained in the table is discussed on pages 319–24.
