The Buckhounds 1660–1837
The master of the buckhounds was appointed by royal warrant. (fn. 1) Cary's appointment in 1660 was embodied in letters patent under the great seal but this course was not followed in subsequent cases. (fn. 2) The office was left vacant between 1702 and 1709 (when it was transferred to the establishment of Prince George of Denmark) and between 1715 and 1727. Under Charles II, the master received an allowance of £2,248 to share with the sergeant and 34 huntsmen. Under William III this figure rose to £2,341 but this was reduced to £1,100 between 1709 and 1712. (fn. 3)
The sergeant made £200 per annum, huntsmen £40 per annum apiece in 1689. (fn. 4)
