Prebend

South Cave (E.R.) with church, pr. and 2 mills a manor of Robert Malet in 1086 (Yorks. DB fos. 320v, 381v). Honour of Malet forfeited 1106, and South Cave passed into honour of Mowbray, prob. before 1114 (Mowbray Chs p. xxiv).

Church of South Cave gr. to abp. of York before 1120 (EYC III no. 1822, cal. Regesta II no. 1237). Land worth £20 in South Cave gr. to cath. by Roger de Mowbray 17 Apr. 1153 (EYC III no. 1823, cal. Mowbray Chs. no. 322), conf. by his wife Alice de Gant 9 June 1154 (EYC III no. 1824, cal. Mowbray Chs. no. 323). Tithe of mills in South Cave gr. by Roger de Mowbray to church of South Cave, called a preb. of York, with messuage in South Cave and tithe of Broomfleet fisheries, conf. by abp. 10 Oct. 1154 ×1157 (EYC III no. 1825 (cal. Mowbray Chs. no. 324) = EEA XX no. 136). Conf. of preb. by pope 20 July 1173 (EYC III no. 1826, not in PUE).

Moiety of church of Otley (W.R.) (abp.'s in 1086, Yorks. DB fos. 303v, 379) part of preb., perhaps gr. by abp. Roger, who gave the other moiety to his foundation of chapel of St Mary and Holy Angels in the Minster (HCY III no. 60 = EEA XX no. 129). Church of Wadworth (W.R.) (Bully fee in 1086, Yorks. DB fos. 319, 373v, 379) part of preb., vicarage ord. by 21 Nov. 1230 (Reg. Gray p. 41).

Houses in Minster Close near abp.'s palace mentioned in ch. after Nov. 1266 (Chs. Vicars Choral nos. 323-4).

In c. 1295 preb. consisted of churches of South Cave and Wadworth and moiety of church of Otley, with tithes, and lands in South Cave, Broomfleet, Oxmardike and Faxfleet and tithes in Weedley (all par. South Cave) (Extents pp. 4-5).

Occ. as this preb. 10 Oct. 1154 × 1157 (EYC III no. 1825 (cal. Mowbray Chs. no. 324) = EEA XX no. 136). Prob. to be identified with John can. who occ. 10 Oct. 1154 × 1164, perhaps early (Chart. Sallay I no. 52 = EEA XX no. 91).

John de Lethebroc

Occ. as this preb. 21 Nov. 1230 (Reg. Gray p. 41). Also occ. as can. 17 Sept. 1235 (Cal. Charter Rolls I 388). D. as this preb. before 11 Nov. 1248 (Reg. Gray p. 259).

[? William of Cave

Occ. as can. of chapel of St Mary and Holy Angels 10 Aug. 1189 × 17 Aug. 1191 (ULL Fuller Collection II/17/1) and 1191 × 94 (YMF I no. 36). First occ. as can. of Minster 1199 (Durham D. & C., Cart. Vet. fos. 119v-120r) and before 1201 (YMF II nos. 86, 96). Occ. several times. Called Master when sent to Rome over el. of abp. 1214 (Rot. Litt. Claus. I 180; Diplomatic Documents 1101-1272, ed. P. Chaplais (1964) no. 99; cf. Rot. Litt. Pat. p. 141). Last occ. Nov. 1215 × Aug. 1218 (Reg. Gray p. 133) and c. Aug. 1217 (YMF I no. 9). His name may suggest that he held this preb. Identification with M. William of Calne has been suggested (see Letters of Guala pp. 5-6 and refs. cited), but this seems unlikely.]

Napoleo Orsini

Held an unnamed preb. of York by 1 Apr. 1280, from the farm of which he was to receive 100m. for 3 years (Reg. Wickwane p. 180). Occ. as can., staying overseas, 16 Feb. 1281 (CPR 1272-81 p. 425), and at el. of abp. Romeyn in Rome, conf. 17 Feb. 1286 (Reg. Hon. IV no. 278, cal. CPL I 483). Also preb. of Lincoln (1 Fasti III 101; 2 Fasti I 113). Cardinal-dcn. of S. Adriano from May 1288 (Eubel I 48). Occ. as this preb. 2 Dec. 1292 (Misc. Reg. fo. 5r) and 21 Sept. 1305 (CPR 1301-07 p. 377). Ineffective royal coll. of this preb. to William Melton, s. v., 2 June 1309 (CPR 1307-13 p. 117). Case over this preb. between cardinal Napoleo and William Melton 23 July to 17 Sept. 1309 (Reg. Greenfield I 33, 35; cf. Foedera, Conventiones ..., ed. T. Rymer (2nd edn., 20 vols.: 1727-35) II 87). William Melton became preb. Driffield 23 March 1310 (Reg. Greenfield IV 102). Cardinal Napoleo held this preb. until d. 23 March 1342 (Eubel I 48; Reg. Greenfield I 292; 2 Fasti VI 42).
