The Speaker acquainted this House, "That he hath received a Letter from the Lord General;" which was commanded to be read, as followeth:

E. of Essex's Letter, in Behalf of Lord Chandois.

My Lords,

At the earnest Request of the Lady Chandois, I granted my Pass for the Lord Chandois to come into the Parliament Quarters, conceiving the gaining his Lordship to desert the Enemy might be a very acceptable Service, in regard of the Power he had in Glocestershire, and those Parts, to do Harm; the Benefit of which Pass his Lordship hath this Day taken, whom I do thereby recommend to the Consideration of your Lordships, and do remain

Islip, May 31, 1644.

Your Lordships humble Servant,
Essex.

L. Chandois committed to the Black Rod.

Ordered, That the Lord Chandois shall stand committed to the Custody of the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, during the Pleasure of this House.

L. Conway to be brought before the House.

Ordered, That the Lord Howard shall bring the Lord Viscount Conway to appear before this House Tomorrow Morning, according to his Recognizance.

Message from the H. C. for Committees to meet about Intelligence from Oxford.

A Message was brought from the House of Commons, by Sir Henry Mildmay Knight, and others:

To let their Lordships know, that they have received some Intelligence concerning Oxford, which will admit of no Delay; therefore they desire that the Lords Committees of both Kingdoms may meet presently, to consider of the Business.

The Answer returned was:

Answer.

That the Lords of the Committee shall meet presently, as is desired.

Archbishop of Cant's Trial.

The House proceeded to the Trial of the Archbishop of Canterbury, upon the Remainder of the Seventh Article of the First Charge, and the Seventh Article of the Second Charge.

Ordered, That the Archbishop shall make his Defence to this Evidence this Afternoon, at Four of the Clock.

Adjourn.

Archbishop of Cant's Trial.

The Archbishop of Canterbury made his Defence to the Evidence as was delivered this Morning.

Ordered, That Tuesday next is appointed for the further Trial of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

His Study to be searched, for Books relative to the King's Coronation;

Ordered, That Mr. Serjeant Whitfield is appointed, between this and Tuesday next, to go, with such as the House of Commons shall appoint, to search in the Archbishop's Study, for Books concerning the King's Coronation.

and for Papers which he desires to peruse.

Ordered, &c. That Mr. Serjeant Whitefeild and Mr. Serjeant Finch, Two of the Assistants of the House of Peers, or One of them, together with such as the House of Commons shall appoint, are to search the Archbishop of Cant's Study, for such Books and Papers as the said Archbishop desires to have a Sight of, who are to be attended by Mr. Dell, or such other.

Adjourn.
