The Messengers sent Yesterday to the House of Commons, return with this Answer:

Answer from the H. C.

That the House of Commons will send an Answer, by Messengers of their own, concerning the Ordinance touching Colchester, and the Ordinance concerning Swanborne.

Message from thence, with an Ordinance and Order;

A Message was brought from the House of Commons, by Mr. Zouch Tate; which consisted of these Particulars:

1. To desire their Lordships Concurrence to an Ordinance concerning Monies to be paid to the Use of Sir Wm. Waller. (Here enter.)

Agreed to.

2. An Order concerning Monies to be lent for the Use of the County of Salop, &c. (Here enter it.)

Agreed to.

with Names for the Assessment in Cambridge;

3. The House of Commons desires that these Persons following may be added to the Weekly Assessment in Cambridgshire:

Agreed to.

and to expedite the Ordinance for raising Houses.

4. The House of Commons desires their Lordships to give Expedition to the Ordinance formerly brought up, for listing of Horses.

To be taken into speedy Consideration.

The Answer returned was:

Answer.

That their Lordships do agree to the Two Orders now brought up, and to the adding of the Names to the Committees for the Weekly Assessment, in the County of Cambridge; but touching the Ordinance for listing of Horses, their Lordships (fn. 1) will take the same into speedy Consideration, and return an Answer by Messengers of their own.

E. of Portland removed.

Ordered, That the Earl of Portland shall be removed from Alderman Towes, to Alderman Atkins's House, under the same Restraint.

Report from the Committee of Heads for a Conference on the Petition to be presented to the King for an Accommodation.

The Committee appointed to draw up the Heads of what shall be said at the Conference with the House of Commons, at the communicating to them the Petition to be presented to the King by the Hands of the Lord General, reported what they thought [ (fn. 2) fit to] be offered at that Conference, which was read as followeth, and approved of:

"My Lords looking with much Compassion upon the divided and the distracted Condition of this Kingdom, and that, in all Probability, the Continuance of the War in Christendom will only remain amongst ourselves in these our sad and Civil Divisions; they have been moved, from the Tenderness they owe to the Preservation of this Kingdom, to make a further Trial of His Majesty's Inclinations to the Peace of it, and consequently to the Peace of His other Kingdoms, which in all human Reason doth depend upon the Peace and Safety of this; and likewise to shew to His Majesty and all the World, that we are still upon our First Grounds and Principles, to petition Him for Peace, thereby to make it visible to His Majesty and the whole Kingdom, that we still pursue the Ways of Peace, which will either procure us that Happiness, or make the Miseries that we and the Kingdom must expect by a Battle between these near-approached Armies the more supportable, (fn. 3) by the Unavoidableness of it.

"And this we do desire, will no Way weaken or contradict the Covenant and Vow we have united ourselves in, but rather pursue the same, in that we do desire the Force whereby Papists are protected against the Justice of the Parliament may be laid down, before we lay down our Arms; neither is it intended to draw on any Treaty, but alone to receive the King's present and positive Answer."

Message to the H. C: for this Conference.

A Message was sent to the House of Commons, by Dr. Aylett and Dr. Heath:

To desire a Conference, touching something concerning the Peace of the Kingdom.

The Answer returned was:

Answer.

That the House of Commons will give a present Conference, as is desired, in the Painted Chamber.

Message from thence, for one about the Army at Nottingham.

A Message was brought from the House of Commons, by Mr. Hatcher:

To desire a Conference, so soon as it may stand with their Lordships Conveniency, touching the State of the Army now at Nottingham.

The Answer returned was:

That this House will give a present Conference, in the Painted Chamber, as is desired.

The House was adjourned during Pleasure, and the Lords went to the Conference; which being ended, the House was resumed.

Captain Stevens to restore the E. of Warwick's Horse.

Ordered, That Captain Stevens, having taken away a Horse of the Earl of Warwicke's, shall attend this House To-morrow Morning, to answer by what Warrant he took it; and the Horse to be presently restored.

Ordinance for 100l. Aqueduct money to Sir Wm. Waller.

"It is this Day Ordered, by the Lords and Commons in Parliament assembled, That John Angell Esquire shall pay unto Sir Arthur Haselrigg, for the Use of Sir William Waller, One Hundred Pounds, Part of the Monies remaining in his Hands, being the Monies raised for the Aqueduct; and for so doing, the said John Angell shall be saved harmless, by both Houses of Parliament; and both Houses do declare and engage the Public Faith of the Kingdom, for Repayment of the said One Hundred Pounds."

Order concerning Money to be raised in Shropshire.

"Whereas, by an Ordinance of the Lords and Commons in this present Parliament assembled, made for the Association of the County of Salop with the several Counties of Warwicke, Stafford, and Chester, and the several Counties and Cities of Chester, Coventry, and Litchfeild, amongst other Things, it is Ordained, That in case any Person or Persons shall lend any Sum or Sums, for Advancement of the present Service of the said County of Salop, an Acquittance under the Hands of any Three of the Committees, whereof Sir John Corbett to be One, shall be sufficient to such Person or Persons to require Payment thereof, upon the Public Faith, or out of such Monies as shall be levied by Assessment to be made in the said County of Salop, by virtue of the Instructions in the said Ordinance mentioned:

"It is now Ordered, by the said Lords and Commons, That an Acquittance under the Hands of any Three of the Committee for the said County of Salop shall be sufficient to such Person or Persons, that shall lend Money for the Purpose asoresaid, to require Payment thereof upon the Public Faith, or out of such Monies as shall be levied by Assessment, as is before mentioned."
