INDEX OF PERSONS, PLACES AND SUBJECTS
Notes
An attempt has been made in this index to indicate a man's progress in the Scriveners' Company. The page references immediately following a name denote that it is mentioned on those pages; page references preceded by one of the following abbreviations indicate references to the man as—
ap., apprentice
ser., servant
a., admitted
as., assistant
s., steward
w., warden
m., master
l.m., Mayor or Lord Mayor of London
Ald., Alderman of London
Where there are several references to two men of the same name, the
descriptions, sen. and jun., have been added, but it is often impossible to
distinguish them accurately. In the same way, two men of the same name,
divided by a good many years, have been designated as (I) and (II), e.g.—
Chapman:
Edward (I)
Edward (II)
The occurrence of a man's name more than once on a page in the same capacity has not been indicated in the index, but a variation in the spelling of a surname occurring more than once on a page has been noted. Crossreferences have been made where there is a wide variation in the spelling of a name and where one form would be widely separated, alphabetically, from another. It should be remembered that the letters i and y, in particular, were often interchanged, e.g. Bideford could easily be recorded as Bydeford, Clifford as Clyfford, or Picot as Pycot. There was also a good deal of phonetical spelling and frequently no simple form for an unusual surname.
To save space, names will be found with variants within the main form, e.g. Grigg(e)s means that the name will be found either as Grigges or Griggs and Hunte(r) as Hunte or Hunter. Forms of name which occur in the text both with and without a terminal apostrophe have been indexed without the apostrophe.
Places are provided with the names of their counties and counties have cross-references to the names of the parishes concerned. Prefixes such as Le, Little, North, South, etc., are under the first word, e.g. West Sheen is under 'West'. Places in London are principally under the entry for London, but cross-references have been provided where thought desirable.
An index of subjects usually presents problems of selection and nomenclature, but it is hoped that an adequate number of cross-references has been provided. Some occupations which could be confused with surnames are followed by the abbreviation '(occ.)'.
Attention is also drawn to the list of contents on pp. v and vi for quick reference to important subject matter, and to the headings of the clauses in the Letters Patent, 1616/17, and in the Ordinances, 1618/19, to be found under Scriveners, charter of incorporation of, and Ordinances of Scriveners' Company on pp. 151 and 147 respectively of the index.
