Canons residentiary of Lincoln

CANONS RESIDENTIARY OF LINCOLN

A prebendary seeking to reside would 'protest his major residence', usually just before the chapter year which started on the Monday after the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (14 September). (fn. 1) He would deposit £20 and invite the canons to 'break bread' with him, and would usually take up his residence at Michaelmas (29 September). It was necessary to possess a prebend to qualify for residence: a dignity or archdeaconry was not sufficient. However, the prebend of Stoke was united with the chancellorship from 1458, giving the chancellor eligibility, and the prebend of Kilsby was re-annexed to the precentorship in 1637. No prebend was permanently annexed to the deanery, who was also required to 'protest his residence' by virtue of a prebend. Two archdeacons of Lincoln and a successions of eighteenth-century deans took the valueless prebend of Thorngate in order to qualify.

Major residence consisted of thirty-four weeks and five days or 243 days, (fn. 2) although absence on chapter business counted as residence. Each canon was responsible for residing continuously for three months at a time, with the turns being chosen at the annual audit in September. After at least fourteen years of residence, a man might 'protest his minor residence', which meant residing for only for a minimum of seventeen weeks and three days or 122 days each year (and receiving proportionate commons for this period). (fn. 3)

The number of residentiaries fluctuated at around five at the beginning of this period. In 1535, when there were six canons resident, the total annual value of the common fund was valued 3 Sept. at £506 31s 4d, yielding a portion of £83 11s 1d for each canon. (fn. 4) During the sixteenth century several non-dignitaries were admitted to residence. In 1591 the number was fixed at four, (fn. 5) normally the dean, precentor, chancellor and subdean, though occasionally the archdeacon of Lincoln. The residentiaries were jealous of any increase in their number because this would mean more people to share in the common fund, but difficulties arose with the workload if one or more of the residentiaries was ill or absent with other duties. Non-residentiary canons who lived in or near Lincoln often joined with one or two residentiaries to form a chapter to install new prebendaries. In 1660, when all the residentiaries had died during the Interregnum, it was nonresidentiaries alone who installed the new dignitaries and prebendaries. When the chapter was reconstituted, the archdeacon of Lincoln failed to gain acceptance to major residence.

By 1735, the chapter agreed that 'great residence' meant a minimum of 119 days, (fn. 6) which enabled the residentiaries to hold university or cathedral office elsewhere.

The act of 3 & 4 Vic. c. 113 (ss. 17, 22, 33, 35) added a fourth canonry, in the gift of the bishop, thus making a chapter of five, with the dean. This fourth canonry was thenceforward given to the archdeacon of Lincoln. The annual average income of the dean was to be £1,000 and that of each canon £500, to be paid by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. By the act of 4 & 5 Vic. c. 39 (s. 5) deans were to be admitted to residence without the need of any prebend as qualification.

Residentiaries are listed below in order of their entry into residence or first occurrence. The prebend by virtue of which they were first admitted is given and other dignities held at Lincoln, though not qualifications for residence, are also shown. The five canons forming the chapter in January 1541 are given in order of their entry into residence. Lists of residentiaries are supplied at ten-yearly intervals to indicate the number and personel of the chapter at given years.

Abp. gr. dispensation from resid. at all his benefices 6 June 1567 at queen's request (ibid. ff. 58v-59v). Chapter withheld dividend payable to him as resid., 21 Sept. (ibid. f. 60). Letter from William Cecil, queen's principal secretary, 13 July 1568, requiring payment (ibid. f. 62). After case was heard at Hatfield before six lords, the parties agreed that Mallet should receive back his £20 deposit and not be paid any further dividends, profits or emoluments of residence (ibid. ff. 62v-63).

On 12 Sept. 1589, the dean, precentor, chancellor and archdcn. of Lincoln passed a decree not to admit any residentiary over the number of four, and they refused to admit Henry Vaux (A/3/7 f. 107).

Bp. Chaderton wrote to the chapter 8 June 1601 that the ruling of 26 July 1591 that there should be only four resid. was not intended to exclude the dean; he desired them to admit him to resid. (A/3/9 f. 18v). The chapter agreed s.d., provided that he had a preb. (ibid. ff. 14v-15v). Staunton instal. as preb. of Centum Solidorum 4 Aug.; protested major resid. 5 Aug. (ibid. f. 20). All the canons residentiary died during the Interregnum. On 12 July 1660, Richard Blow (Welton Beckhall) installed the new chancellor, and on 23 Aug., he with Henry Wilson (South Scarle) and later the same day Vere Harcourt (Corringham) installed the subdean and five prebendaries (A/3/9 f. 207r-v). Henry Wilson, Stephen Luddington (archdcn. of Stowe) and John Coope (Stoke) performed other installations, 1-24 Sept., including those of the new archdcn. of Lincoln and precentor (ibid. ff. 208-10). On 18 Oct., the precentor, subdean and archdcn. of Lincoln are said to be a chapter (ibid. f. 212). After 26 Nov., when the dean and chancellor were installed as prebendaries, the chapter consisted of these five (ibid. ff. 214v-215). No protestations of major residence are recorded. However, the archdcn. of Lincoln, Raphael Throckmorton, did not succeed in establishing his right to major residence.

Robert Mapletoft D.D. (Clifton and subdean) 1660-1671.

Occ. in chapter 18 Oct. 1660 (A/3/9 f. 212). Dean of Ely 1667; protested minor resid. 29 Aug. 1668, but chapter refused to accept it, because he had performed only 8 years' resid. instead. of a minimum of 14 (ibid. ff. 262v-263). Renounced resid. 13 Sept. 1671 (A/3/11 f. 7v).

Occ. in chapter 18 Oct. 1660, but does not seem to be included in a chapter 2 Feb. 1661 (A/3/9 ff. 212, 218). A case before Bp. Sanderson in London 31 March revealed that Throckmorton had been refused major resid. by others in the chapter because this would bring the number of canons over 4; the bp. confirmed that this action was correct and that the number of 4 was to be exceeded only when it would mean excluding a dean (ibid. ff. 225-226v).
