PREBENDARIES OF GILLINGHAM MAJOR

Preb. established by act of parliament 1545, as a result of exch. between earl of Hertford and bp. of Salisbury: on the next vac. of Gillingham preb., formerly in Shaftesbury abbey, the bp. is to make two prebends out of it in Salisbury cath. (L. & P. xx ii no. 850 (6)). Robert Peterson B.D., who compounded for first-fruits of the preb. of Gillingham 5 Sept. 1545 (P.R.O., E 334/3 f. 65), but was not instit. or instal. as preb. of Salisbury, d. 18 Jan./2 March 1555 (P.R.O., PROB 11/37, PCC 25 More; West Sussex Record Office, Ep. 1/1/6 f. 104v).
