  • 27. Roger the miller of Hereford occ. while William de Burchulle was sheriff of Hereford, 1197-8 or 1200 (Hereford ch. nos. 1237 and 1526) and 1216 × 1231 (ibid. no. 2865). Roger the miller (perhaps his father) also occ. 1183 (Pipe Roll 29 Henry II 1183 p. 109).

For Hugh's gift to the chapter see Hereford ch. no. 2866 of 1219 × 1231, which refers to Hugh as 'former' chapl. of St Martin's (i.e. incumbent of the church of St Martin's in Hereford), suggesting that he was by then dead. Hugh occ. still living c. 1225 × 1250 (ibid. no. 916), and therefore presumably d. between 1225 and 1231.

Both Walter de Clifford I (son of Richard fitzPons), who d. c. 1190, and the Walter de Clifford who d. 1263 (usually termed Walter III, but in fact Walter IV (see n. 14 above)) had wives called Margaret. Of the two couples the earlier one is the likelier, since Walter de Clifford I requested an obit entry for his daughter Rosamund (see n. 226 above) and would perhaps also have wished Hereford cath. to commem. him and his wife. For Walter de Clifford I see DNB IV 537-8; see also VCH Worcs. IV 317, VCH Glos. XI 264 and I. J. Sanders, English Baronies: a Study of their Origin and Descent 1086-1327 (Oxford, 1960) p. 35.
  • 45. Obits for two William Torels are recorded in this book, the other on 6 Nov. One of the two is likely to have been the William Torel who occ. between 1158 and 1199 (cf. Pipe Roll 2-3-4 Henry II p. 144; Pipe Roll 1 John 1199 p. 216); he was sheriff of Hereford 1183-5 (Pipe Roll 29 Henry II 1183 p. 109; Pipe Roll 30 Henry II 1184 p. 25; Pipe Roll 31 Henry II 1185 p. • 56. Richard the chanc. cannot be more closely identified: there is no evidence for a Richard as chanc. of the cath. On the other hand there are gaps in the tenure of the dignity, for example in the middle of the 13th cent. (see list 5), and it is possible that Richard might have held office then.

  • 61. For the possible identifications see H. Barkly, 'The earlier house of Berkeley', Transactions of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Soc. viii (1883-4) 193-223; this Roger is likeliest to be either Roger IV, d. by 1191, or Roger V, d. by May 1221.
