  • 5. For other members of the Roculf or Rohulf family - Alice, Peter, John, Rose and Richard - see entries for 6 May, 24 June, 27 Sept. and 23 Nov.
  • 6. Edrick is presumably the mid 12th-cent. Hereford moneyer Edrich (cf. Capes, Charters p. 15).

  • 8. List 3.
  • 9. Walter the carpenter occ. 1201 × 1216 and in the first half of the 13th cent. (Hereford ch, nos. 972 and 494; also no. 205 which cannot be more closely dated than the 13th cent.).
  • 10. Geoffrey de Scotot occ. in a ch. of the mid 12th cent. (cart. II fo, 170v, witnessed by dean Ralph (c. 1134-c. 1158: list 2) and by can. Ranulf fitzErchemar); he was presumably related to the Richard and Roger de Escotot (Asketot) who occ. in the late 12th cent. (cf. Pipe Roll 1 John 1199 pp. 216, 218); another member of the family, Lady C. de Escotot, lived in the early decades of the 13th cent. (cf. EEA VII no. 363n).
  • 11. A Ralph de Sancta Columba was can. of York Minster in the 12th cent. (1 Fasti VI 127). For other members of the family - Odo, Hugh, Osbert and another Ralph - see entries for 23 Feb., 15 March, 1 Sept. and 13 Sept. below.

  • 13. Missing from B.328; supplied from p. 3 of the app. to R. Rawlinson, History and Antiquities.
  • 14. the second i of ii Idus appears to have been erased; this folio has been badly rubbed and soiled; later annotations on folio: nota bene 1' m' (in hand of xvi/xvii cent.); Obituary This is printed at the end off (sic) Hist. & Ant. of Hereford 1717 (in hand of xix cent.); (illegible word) yeare named in the booke is 1297, sed quere in capl' 8p (hand of xvii cent.).
  • 15. Wulviva and Godiva were pre-Conquest benefactresses of Hereford cath. (cf. comment by Capes, Charters p. iii). The manors they gr. - Woolhope, Preston, Pyon and Norton - formed the nucleus of the lands held by the chapter in common.
  • 16. Walter de Clifford II, husband of Agnes, d, in or before the early months of 1208 when his wife Agnes is referred to as a widow (Pipe Roll 10 John 1208 p. 101 and cf. Rot. Litt. Pat. 1 80b of 20 March 1208), He was sheriff of Hereford in 1206-7 and for part of the year ending at Michaelmas 1208, but the accounts were rendered by Osbert fitzWilliam 1206-7 and in 1208 by Richard le Burgeis (Pipe Roll 8 John 1206 p. 65; Pipe Roll 9 John 1207 p. 157; Pipe Roll 10 John 1208 p. 190). He was the eldest son and heir of Walter de Clifford I (cf I. J. Sanders, English Baronies: a Study of their Origin and Descent 1086-1327 (Oxford, 1960) p. 35, which, however, assumes that Walter I's heir survived until 1221). The Walter de Clifford who d. in 1221 (ibid.) was his and Agnes's son (cf. the younger Walter's ch. for Dore, preserved in Curia Regis Rolls IX 203-4, which gives his mother's name as Agnes de Cundi). Although the ch. was entered on roll 74 in Trinity term 1220, it must have been issued before the flight of William de Braose senior and his son in 1208, and may well have been issued immediately after Waiter II's death. Agnes de Cundy's will, issued in the lifetime of her husband, survives as BL Harley Charter 48 C 25: it can be dated 1195 × 1208, while H., either Henry de Castilion or Henry de Sandford, was archdcn. of Canterbury (1 Fasti II 14).
