LIST 29 PREBENDARIES OF PRATUM MINUS

PREBEND

For the identification of Pratum Minus from Pratum Maius, see comment at the head of list 28 above. In the taxation of pope Nicholas IV of c. 1291 the preb. held by M. Richard, archdcn., which is identifiable with Pratum Minus, was endowed with an acre of meadow assessed at 6d (Taxatio p. 169a). This preb. is presumably to be identified with the 'Prebenda Magistri Eustacii' in the 1294 list of prebs. (Reg. Swinfield p. 305), where it is described as being endowed with 'dimidia acra prati iii d'. It is possible therefore that the earliest holder of the preb. was one of the two 12th-cent. cans. called M. Eustace. Valor III 11 assessed Pratum Minus at 39s ½d, most of which would have consisted of small commons.

PREBENDARIES

M. Eustace

Either M. Eustace I, who occ. as can. 1131 × 1137 and 1144, or M. Eustace II, who occ. as can. 1187 × mid 1190s, and mid 1190s × 1201 (for both, see list 36).

William de Albigni (fn. 1)

Can. of Hereford, preb. unspecified, by May/June 1280 (Reg. Cantilupe p. 279; list 36); had vac. his preb., to which Richard of Hertford the archdcn. was coll., and which therefore must have been this one, 8 Dec. 1288 (Reg. Swinfield p. 527), and since he was commem. 6 Dec. (app. 1 fo. 49v), he presumably d. 6 Dec. 1288.

Richard of Hertford

Archdcn. of Hereford (list 6); coll. to the preb. vac. by William de Albigni 8 Dec. 1288 (Reg. Swinfield p. 527); occ. holding one acre of meadow worth 6d c. 1291 (Taxatio p. 169); coll. to preb. of Warham (list 33) 21 March 1293, resigning this preb., which was bestowed on William of Kingscote (Reg. Swinfield p. 529).

M. William of Kingscote (fn. 2)

Coll. 21 March 1293 to unnamed preb. vac. by archdcn. Richard of Hertford, prob. Pratum Minus (Reg. Swinfield p. 529); occ. as resident can., preb. unspecified, 29 Sept. 1295 (Capes, Charters p. 168); coll. to preb. of Preston 17 May 1303 (list 30), and was succeeded in preb. of Pratum Minus by M. James of Berkeley, who was also coll. 17 May 1303 (Reg. Swinfield p. 534; 2 Fasti II 42). Can. of Wells (1 Fasti VII 56, 2 Fasti VIII 49) and Exeter (2 Fasti IX 24); dean of Exeter 1309 (ibid. IX 4); d. by 19 Apr. 1311 (ibid. VIII 49).
