Litton (Som.): purchased by bp. Giso from Alfred, conf. by kg. Edward Confessor Apr. 1061 × May 1065 (Keynes, 'Giso' app. I no. 7), conf. again May 1065 (ibid. no. 9; and see ibid. p. 229). Held by canons of Wells in 1086 (DB I 89c; Keynes, 'Giso' p. 271).

Church of Litton established by bp. Robert as preb. to be attached to deanery (EEA X no. 46, for which see below, app. 1). Papal confs. 22 Jan. 1158 and 15 June 1176 (with its chapel) (PUE II no. 101, 159).

Liberties of preb. had been disturbed, 16 Oct. 1247 (Cal. I 75).

John de Dereham

First occ. as can. 24 March 1243 (CPR 1232-47 p. 369 = Cal. I 96, cf. p. 98). Bp.'s coll. to this preb. in succession to M. Elias of Dereham received by dean and chapter 10 Apr. 1245 (Cal. I 121). Occ. as can. frequently. Last occ. 1 Dec. 1251 (ibid. p. 134). Presum. a relative of M. Elias of [West] Dereham (Norf.).

Walter of Merton

Archdcn. of Bath, occ. 5 Jan. 1264 and ? 1266; had been succeeded by 1268 (list 10). Occ. as can. 2 Feb. 1266 (Reg. Giffard (Bath) p. 7, where W. de Merton is wrongly extended as William (York, Borthwick Institute of Historical Research, Reg. 2 fo. 70v)). Occ. as this preb. 12 Apr. 1269 (Cal. I 109; CPR 1266-72 p. 330). Bp. of Rochester, el. c. 20 July 1274, cons. 21 Oct., d. 27 Oct. 1277 (1 Fasti II 77).

Next identified preb. is Bartholomew Tirel, who exch. this preb. for Cudworth 13 Jan. 1345 (2 Fasti VIII 55).
